the slip from the ghekko Il y en a qui ont quand même de la chance: rendez-vous compte, The Slip, formé en 1997 à boston, ont sorti leur premier album en 1998, ont dû en vendre à peine plus de 5.000 copies depuis, mais vu qu'ils tournent intensément aux States, en particulier pour des premières parties de John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, The Funky Meters, Richie Havens, the Greyboy Allstars, Jerry Garcia Band, George Clinton and P-Funk All-Stars, Galactic, Jazz Mandolin Project, Moe., Steve Coleman and Five Elements, DJ Logic et The String Cheese Incident (j'en passe...), et bien la rédaction du djouls.com s'y est fatalement intéressée, et comme nous pouvions le prévoir c'est quand même vachtement bien, et vous allez donc pouvoir vous aussi les découvrir. Cool non? Ah, The Slip, vous ne savez toujours pas ce que c'est? Ok, ok... The Slip est un trio guitare/basse/batterie (le guitariste chante et joue parfois des claviers) qui nous propose là leur premier album, studio, où l'on retrouve 3 invités jouant du sax sur au total 4 morceaux (mais on parle donc bien d'un trio quand même). Leur musique est constituée d'un mélange assez fin et habile de jazz instrumental, de chansons pop au goût de jazz à la Steely Dan avec de bonnes jams au milieu. On est loin du groove rock, certes, mais on se rapproche du groove-jazz sur certains trucs. La voix est assez agréable, dans un registre Steely Dan (encore) ou Jackson Browne. Les compositions sont plutôt accrocheuses par moments, plus planantes, plus «jazz guitar» à d'autres. Et pour un premier album, c'en est presque déroutant: il est quand même homogène. A découvrir. Pour ceux que ça intéresse nous avons quelques lives à échanger.
