merl saunders and his funky friends live Funky funky! Merl saunders s'amuse et prend son pied avec quelques potes de passage ici où là. Dès les premières notes, on se sent plongé dans l'atmosphère chaleureuse et enjouée qui anime les clubs américains, connus ou pas: Great American Music Hall de San Francisco, Wetlands de New York, House of Blues à Hollywood mais aussi Ventura House de Ventura, Club Toast de Burlington (Vermont) et Mishiwaka à Bellevue (Colorado…). Prise de son live, donc, malheureusement parfois un peu approximative, mais le plaisir de jouer est évident chez les musiciens. Et cette joie semble bien partagée par le public. Serait-ce le seul disque rassemblant Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Trey Anastasio (Phish), John Popper (Blues Traveler) et Dr John – entre autres invités? Les titres joués sont majoritairement des reprises des répertoires blues et affiliés, ce qui facilite la spontanéité des funky friends. Le premier titre nous met dans l'ambiance: "Baby take off your clothes… real slow… mama take off that dress…" (l'audience n'est pas insensible à ces injonctions…): on reconnaît rapidement une version bien enlevée de "You Can Leave Your Hat On" qui a le mérite de réchauffer tout le monde. Comme sur le reste de l'album, le groove est impeccable pour les titres rapides. Les claviers de Merl Sauders enveloppent l'ensemble sonore de sons organiques, Steve Kimock (Zero, The Other Ones) nous balance quelques solos (soli pour les puristes) aériens bien sentis. Les ballades tendent parfois un peu vers le sirupeux (je n'aime pas vraiment ce son d'orgue clinquant comme sur "Paris Blues"). On notera une belle version de "Dark Star" (sans J. Garcia) et une jam effrénée avec Trey Anastasio sur "We All Wanna Boogie". Le titre en duo avec Garcia, vieux compère de Saunders, date de 1989. De la musique festive donc, simple et sans prise de tête pour ceux à qui manque cette ambiance de ce côté de l'Atlantique.
