jazz is dead Quand je suis arrivé chez Djouls (je ne vais pas vous expliquer qui c'est ou alors je vais vous demander ce que vous foutez là!?) et que j'ai vu CE titre sur CETTE pochette, ma joie n'a fait qu'un tour avant de se répandre dans la pièce en gazouillis enfantins, balbutiements incrédules et autres envolées onomatopesques, le tout agrémenté de quelques pas d'une rhumba endiablée. Billy Cobham! Le guitariste de l'Aquarium Rescue Unit! + un clavier qui a faillit jouer avec le Dead et un bassiste pote de Bob Weir! Qui reprennent le Dead en jazz-rock!!! Yes!! La set-list est mortelle en plus! Mais l'écoute du bijou promis me raplaplatit aussitôt. Billy Cobham le premier. C'est sec. C'est froid.
La musique du Grateful Dead peut supporter l'amateurisme à la rigueur, mais pas la rigueur, le manque de chaleur, d'amour, d'aisance et de liberté. Comme quoi il ne suffit pas d'être pro. Je me console quand même avec le "King Solomon's marbles", seul titre live de l'album, et le "Help - Slipknot - Franklin". Sur des morceaux de composition plus jazz et instrumentale, le groupe semble enfin un peu à l'aise. Billy peut enfin arroser toutes ses cymbales et syncoper à tout bout de champ et T. Lavitz laisse de côté ses sons de synthé pourris à la Brent Mydland. On se demande souvent, dans tous ces tributes musicaux et posthumes où se trouve la frontière entre hommage et profit (c'est vrai, il y en a marre de tous ces parasites à deux balles, ils sont même allés jusqu'à faire tourner le Jerry Garcia Band sans Jerry Garcia et son co-fondateur et bassiste John Kahn, mort une semaine après lui, merde alors! Fais chier putain quoi!). Sur cette album cette frontière est la reprise "Red baron" (l'originale est dans l'excellent album "Spectrum" de Billy Cobham avec Tommy Bolin à la guitare), entre la première partie (de 1 à 4 grosso modo) vraiment pas super, et la deuxième, pas mal du tout (de 7 à 8, un peu courte). Le tout dans un esprit aussi jazz que les arrangements de Liane Foly.
P.S. Dans notre célèbre rubrique 'vous allez me dire', je n'ai pas trop parlé du gratteux, pas fait de comparaison garciesque ou phileshesque, mais croyez-moi, c'est pas très grave.
