govt mule live Mettons-nous d'accord, lorsque Warren Haynes, Matt Abs et Allen Woody quittèrent les Allman Brothers Band pour former Gov't Mule, nous n'étions sûrs de rien. Leur premier album ("Gov't Mule", 1995) fut très bien, largement au-dessus du lot dans la catégorie blues-rock à l'époque, et surtout le "Live at Roseland Ballroom" du New Year's Eve 95 était une tuerie Hendrixienne. Ensuite, le "Dose" de 1997 nous laissa sur notre fin : trop produit, trop blues, trop carré. Heureusement, en concert, Gov't Mule met une leçon à tous les blueseux actuels. Enregistré au Roxy, à Atlanta (Georgie) durant les show du New Year's Eve 1998, ce double CD remet les pendules à l'heure. Les invités se bousculent : Randall Bramblett (sax) et Chuck Leavell (claviers), membres du groupe Sea Level (fin des années 70), Bernie Worrell (orgue et clavinet) de Parliament/Funkadelic, Marc Ford (guitare) des Black Crowes, Jimmy Herring (guitare) de l'Aquarium Rescue Unit et de Jazz Is Dead, Derek Trucks (guitare) et son batteur Yonrico Scott (percussions) du Derek Trucks Band… ça jamme dans tous les sens! Des reprises de Black Sabbath ("War pigs"), Humble Pie ("30 days in the hole"), le bluesman Elmore James ("Look on Yonder wall"), Van Morrison ("I've been workin"), Traffic ("Sad and deep as you"), Neil Young ("Cortez the killer")… ça va. Le deuxième CD est encore plus free que le premier, avec seulement 4 titres au compteur, pour clore sur une jam exceptionnelle d'une demi-heure sur "Afro-blue" joué à huit sur scène : 3 guitares, deux batteurs, un sax et Bernie Worrell à l'orgue et au piano Wurlitzer! À la sortie de ce disque Derek Trucks fut convié à rejoindre occasionnellement son oncle Butch au sein des Allman Brothers. À priori on devrait voir tout ce beau monde continuer à jammer ensemble pour quelque temps encore. Fabuleux.
