Enfin une production acoustique! Dans la même veine modern-Jazz qu'un Amon Tobin, Cinematic Orchestra nous livre de la musique live sur batterie, basse, saxophones trompette et claviers. Quelques boucles servent de base aux improvisations et tout est retraité par un seul maître d'œuvre: Jason Swinscoe. Contrairement à nombre de ses confrères de l'électro, Swinscoe a su garder les timbres essentiels du Jazz. Il n'a pas eu l'outrecuidance d'effacer une batterie derrière du gros beat; ou d'étouffer les cuivres par des nappes éthérées qui s'étendent uniformément en longueur. La trompette peut s'étendre façon Miles Davis et le soprano jeter quelques accords coltraniens –sans toutefois prétendre atteindre la densité du maître-. Et oui, aussi miraculeux que cela puisse paraître dans le paysage électro actuel, Cinematic Orchestra a su retrouver l'atmosphère des petits matins brumeux, des journées lugubres des grandes villes post-industrielles que le quartet légendaire de Coltrane avait figé 39 ans plus tôt pour l'éternité. On est bien-sûr loin de la richesse mélodique d'un Coltrane ou d'un Mc Coy Tyner, mais l'indigence du Cinematic Orchestra est palliée par des cuivres qui savent se faire massifs et rajouter au dramatique. Le tout est mené par un tempo résolument Soul accompagné par moment d'une voix forte et toute et en hauteur à la Shirley Bassey. Les 70's sont présents mais Jason Swinscoe ne s'est pas contenté d'un simple travail de collage, il a réussi une osmose entre acoustique et électronique qui on l'espère fera des émules.
