[djouls.com - best of 2004 - part one] Grant Phabao "Presents Lone Ranger & Friends" (TIMEC 2004)
Grant Phabao, alias "Dub Salvador" pour certains en manque de mix vraiment profond, "Je Sais Pas Ou Il Va Chercher Ses Oreilles" pour d'autres, est parti en 2003 à Kingston (Jamaïque), jusqu'à New York (USA) en passant par le studio La Pinède à Paris (France!), pour produire deux albums de reggae comme un véritable Lee Perry ou King Tubby, avec la minutie d'un Herbie Hancock et d'un Mike Marsh (The Exchange). Le bouche-à-oreille bat son plein et les invités se bousculent aux sessions organisés par le Grant. Un premier album voit finalement le jour début 2004, avec en invité de marque une des inventeurs du rub-a-dub (plus tard ragga), légende de chez Studio One, Lone Ranger, et quelques-uns de ses amis, parmi lequels Ray I (célèbre pour son "Weatherman Skank" ou ses collaborations avec Jacob Miller) ou Danny Dread. Un chef d'oeuvre de reggae roots aux tubes multiples (la cover de "Fever"!).
Le premier pressage (1.000 ex.) étant été vendu en moins de 2 jours (quasiment intégralement sur Ebay et aux abonnés du djouls.com) il faudra désormais attendre la diffusion de cet album par le réseau libre et légal Utopeer.com et le prochain pressage, limité cette fois à 500 copies, prévus tout deux pour l'automne, mais remasterisés en THSIX Supersaound™ par Grant Phabao lui-même!! Ça c'est de la bonne nouvelle. Suivra ensuite début 2005 le deuxième album issu de ces sessions, moins roots et plus électronique, lui, avec Horace Andy, Simon Diamond, Pompidoo, Quench Aid & John Wayne... Et ça, c'est de la super bonne nouvelle.

BIOGRAPHY GRANT PHABAO (french)

Grant Phabao rencontre le tout jeune label Pro-Zak Trax dès la sortie de leur premier maxi en 1997, et devient très vite l'ingénieur du son maison.

Il participe aux enregistrements des albums d'Aleëm, de Stéphane Malca et de Seven Dub, avant de sortir, en 1998, son premier maxi, "Tub".
La face A, véritable «Tub» en effet, sera jouée dans tous les clubs de la planète par les plus grands Djs au monde. Erik Morillo l'a même jouée pendant plus d'un an au plus fort de son set, en bouclant trois fois de suite la montée! "Andub Head Yüdü" , en face B, le placera d'entrée au panthéon des maîtres du dub, aux côtés des Lee Perry et autres King Tubby... Le label de Chicago Guidance ne s'y trompe pas et choisit immédiatement le track pour clore sa compilation "Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions".

Son second maxi, "Cannonbutt", sort l'année suivante. D'une efficacité redoutable sur un dancefloor lui aussi en face A, il lui permet surtout de présenter en face B Henchy, un des hurluberlus avec qui il lance en parallèle son propre label T.I.M.E.C..

Il réalise ensuite avec le Professor Oz l'album de ce dernier, "One", ainsi que quelques remixes à 110% de taux de reggae dedans (2 versions de "Stupid Jack" pour Kojak et un "Waves & Skunk" pour Professor Oz). Les studios de Pro-Zak Trax à Bagnolet bouillonnent.

En 2001 il sort un troisième maxi très classieux, "Jus' Play My Mind", dont la face B avec son discours de Martin Luther King, "We Shall Overcome", retourne encore les chillouts aujourd'hui.

La publicité commence alors à s'intéresser de plus en plus à lui et Grant Phabao commence à signer des musiques pour Hugo Boss, Metropolitan, Passoã... Mais en fait, il passe le plus clair de son temps à produire et à collaborer avec les artistes les plus dingues du paysage musical français: Captain Détendu, Chuck Moe Reece, Djouls, Funky Frenchman, John DVDR, Mister K, Popof, Professor Oz, The Mighty Blunts… qui se regroupent sous la forme d'un collectif à géométrie variable du même nom que son propre label : T.I.M.E.C., pour The Incredible Melting Entertainment Compagnons.

"Tub" ressort en 2002 remixé par Antoine Clamaran et Jordi Graü, et refait le tour du monde. En 2003, tout s'accélère avec la production de 3 albums concepts de T.I.M.E.C. (le collectif), "Time(c) To Relax", "Tear The Latin Roof Off" et "Noëlectro", mais aussi du premier album solo de Grant Phabao, enregistré entre Paris et Kingston, que l'on attend tous avec notre vieux pote Himpah Science.

Grant Phabao Grant Phabao meets the still young Pro-Zak Trax label just when their first Ep is issued, and quickly becomes the label's sound engineer. He takes part in the recording of Aleëm, Stephane Malca and Seven Dub's albums, before releasing, in 1998, his first single, "Tub".

The A-side, a real "Tub" indeed, will be played in all the clubs of the planet by the biggest Djs in the world. Erik Morillo even played it for more than one year at the climax of his set, looping three times in a row the famous and massive rush/break of the track! "Andub Head Yudu", the B-side, will directly place him at the Pantheon of the Masters of dub, beside Lee Perry, King Tubby and the others... Guidance, one of Chicago most illustrious record labels, will not be mistaken and immediately chooses the track to close its "Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions" compilation.

His second EP, "Cannonbutt", is released the following year. Its A-side is frighteningly effective on a dancefloor too, but it's the B-side that especially enables him to present Henchy, one of the crazy guys with which he launches his own record label, T.I.M.E.C..

Grant Phabao shares then the production duties with Professor Oz for the Prof's first album, "One", and does some remixes with a "110% rate of reggae in it" (2 versions of "Stupid Jack" for Kojak and "Waves & Skunk" for Professor Oz). Pro-Zak Trax's studios in Bagnolet, near Paris, are bubbling with creative power.

In 2001 he releases his third EP, a very classy one, "Jus' Play My Mind", whose B-side with its Martin Luther King speech, "We Shall Overcome", still warms with sense the best chillouts today.

Advertising then starts to get more and more interested in his works and Grant Phabao starts to produce music for Hugo Boss, Metropolitan, Passoa... But clearly, he spends most his time producing and collaborating with the most crazy artists of the french musical landscape: Captain Détendu, Chuck Moe Reece, Djouls, Funky Frenchman, John DVDR, Mister K, Popof, Professor Oz, The Mighty Blunts... who all regroup in the form of a collective of the same name as his own label: T.I.M.E.C. (for The Incredible Melting Entertainment Compagnons).

"Tub" is issued again in 2002 as a 12" of remixes by Antoine Clamaran and J. Graü. In 2003 things go the next level with the production of 3 concept-albums from T.I.M.E.C. (the collective), "Time(c) To Relax", "Tear The Latin Roof Off" and "Noëlectro", but also the production of Grant Phabao's first album, recorded between Paris and Kingston, all this to be released very soon.
