LEGENDARY DETROIT JAZZ COLLECTIVE REUNITED - 1971, in Detroit, trombonist Phil Ranelin and saxophonist Wendell Harrison started a band, a recording company, and a magazine, and called them the Tribe. This legendary political, social, and aesthetic collective also included key members like drummer Doug Hammond, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Pianist Harold McKinney plus musicians like Band The Mixed Bag, Bass Clarinetist and Woodwindist Aaron Neal, Bassist Ed Pickens, Bassist Will Austin, Bassist Lopez Leon, Bassist John Dana, Bassist Reginald (Shoo-Be-Doo) Fields, Conga Player Charles Miles, Drummer / Percussionist Roy Brooks, Drummer Billy Turner, Drummer Ron Jackson, Drummer George Davidson, Drummer Bud Spangler, Drummer Danny Spencer, Drummer Ike Daney, Drummer Gayelynn McKinney (Harold Mckinney's daughter), Drummer Michelle Jhara-Mckinney (Harold Mckinney's wife), Guitarist Ralph Armstrong, Keyboardist / Pianist Pamela Wise, Keyboardist David Durrah, Keyboardist Keith Vreeland, Keyboardist Buddy Budson, Keyboardist Charles Eubanks, Percussionist Barbara Huby, Percussionist Billy Turner, Percussionist Lorenzo Brown, Pianist Kenny Cox, Pianist Charles Eubanks, Poetry group The Black Messengers Synth player Daryl Dybka, Trumpeter Charles Moore, Vocalist Jeamel Lee, Vocalist Spanky Wilson , Vocalist Leon Thomas, and others.
The collective released a number of highly collectable albums including records like Phil Ranelin's "Vibes From The Tribe," Marcus Belgrave's "Gemini II," Harold McKinney's "Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile," Doug Hammond and David Durrah's "Sea of Nurnen," and Wendell Harrison's "An Evening with the Devil" - many of these releases have been reissued or licensed in the US, Europe and Japan by labels like Hefty, Soul Jazz, P Vine and Ubiquity. Given the broad nature and appeal of these recordings they have become highly praised and sort out by collectors of jazz, funk and electronic music. Interviewing Wendell Harrison in 2001 Jazz Times said the label "packed a strong musical punch remarkable for its unorthodoxy."
Tribe like Sun Ra throughout his career (releasing records on his own EL Saturn), Max Roach and Charles Mingus in the early 60s (releasing their own music), Stanley Cowell and Charles Tolliver with their Strata East collective in New York, the AACM collective in Chicago (Braxton, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and many more), the Black Artists Group in St. Louis and the Underground Musicians' Association in Los Angeles (Horace Tapscott and associates), defined the very meaning of independent spirit and community in jazz. Few people in the Detroit area music scene have been untouched in some shape or form by the influence and impact of Tribe. The House, Techno and Hip Hop generation among them.
In spring 2007, internationally respected innovative producer Carl Craig re-assembled the remaining core living original members of the Tribe collective all still heavily active nationally and internationally and still very much in contact with other - Wendell Harrison (still living and working in Detroit), Phil Ranelin (now living and working in Los Angeles), Marcus Belgrave (still living in Detroit) and Doug Hammond (now living in Germany). In Craig's newly refined Detroit Studio a brand new collective album started to take shape. The record will feature classic Tribe material including a brand new arrangement of the Tribe classic "Vibes from The Tribe," as well as new compositions written especially for the record.

The first taster for the yet to be titled September 2008 album was the December 2007 single "Livin in A New Day" an appropriately titled brand new composition by Phil Ranelin. Describing the new song Phil said "It felt great to be back laying down some tracks with the guys. The inspiration for "Livin In A New Day " comes as usual for me just checking out the daily vibes on the planet. We are in very critical times in my opinion and there are lots of issues that need our attention. Things have drastically changed in the last twenty or thirty years and unfortunately most of it hasn't really been good for the planet or the people of the planet, and then you have all of these on going wars, lies, disruptions and fear promotion that's taking place it's really crazy ! That's "Livin In A New Day." A second single from the album "Vibes From The Tribe" will be released in the Spring.

The second single from the album "Vibes From The Tibe / Livin' in a new Day - C2 remix" features a brand new remake of the Tribe classic anthem "Vibes From The Tribe" plus a non-album Carl Craig remix of "Livin' in a New Day" that was especially made for UK DJ Gilles Peterson. This was released in early August following the Tribe collectives first ever live gig in New York at the new (le) Poisson Rouge space (formerly the Village Gate) in June as part of the JVC JAZZ FESTIVAL.The show will feature a full live band including Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Wendell Harrison on reeds and Phillip Ranelin on Trombone.
Fans of Carl Craig should note this is not a Carl Craig album - he is the producer here and for him this album is about presenting the Tribe sound. In some ways it's an extension of his work with the Detroit Experiment but moreover it's a revival of his label Community Projects which released the fantastic jazz album "World Trade Music" from Francisco Mora in the late 90s. Community Projects is a sister label to Planet E Communications - devoted to non electronic music including jazz, world musics and blues. It's basis is in the Detroit and Detroit ex-pat community. Carl will not be performing live with Tribe and will not be doing interviews for the album.

Marcus Belgrave in brief :
Marcus has been an internationally recognized jazz trumpet great for over forty years. Bursting into prominence as a teenaged sensation in The Ray Charles Orchestra. Marcus also delivered the soulful horn that helped to define the legendary "Motown Sound" as a featured player on many of the labels classic releases. Marcus released one solo album on Tribe in the early '70s - "Gemini" - it featured the classic "Space Odyssey." It was re-released by London label Soul Jazz in the early '00s. Another classic from that album "Glue Fingers" has been remade for the upcoming Tribe album. Marcus has also had the honor of being chosen by Wynton Marsalis for the original Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has performed with Ray Charles, Max Roach, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Dizzy Gillespie and John Sinclair, amongst others. Marcus also has a reputation for cultivating young jazz talent. Some examples are: Rodney Whittaker, Kenny Garrett, Regina Carter, James Carter, Geri Allen, Bob Hurst, Karriem Riggins, and Carlos McKinney. Additionally he can found teaching on the faculty of Oberlin Conservatory. He continues to tour and record around the world ona frequent basis.

Wendell Harrison in brief :
Wendell's work as a jazz clarinetist and tenor saxophonist was initially on the bandstand and in the studio with the likes of Jack McDuff, Elvin Jones, Sonny Stitt, Grant Green, Hank Crawford, and Sun Ra in the 1960s. Moving back to Detroit in 1970 he became a mainstay and backbone of the Detroit scene which he remains to this day. He started co-founded the label Tribe with Phil Ranelin and has since launched Rebirth Inc. a non profit jazz arts organization, and WenHa Music; record label and publishing company. Wendell works extensively as a musician and educator. His instruction books, the Be Boppers Method Book I and II have become essential for young musicians. He has frequently featured talents such as Leon Thomas, Kirk Lightsey, Roy Brooks and Charles Tolliver. Now, Wendell leads a number of his own ensembles inlcuding his famed MAMA'S LICKING STICK CLARINET ENSEMBLE which periodically features many other known jazz stars such as James Carter, Don Byron and Howard Johnson. Harrison received many awards including recently Chamber Music America's and Doris Duke Foundation's New Works and Creation project, Chamber Music America's French American Exchange project and Arts Midwest Jazz Masters Award (to name a few). In 1996 toured with an all star ensemble, The Michigan Jazz Masters internationally performing an extensive tour of Africa and the Middle East. In addition, Wendell also performed as a jazz master with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who featured two movements from his suite Something For Pops.

Phil Ranelin in brief :
Ranelin is a diehard independent straight-ahead Jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. In his early days he performed his trombone along side the likes of Wes Montgomery, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eddie Harris and Grant Green. Ranelin is loved and respected around the globe as a veteran trombonist of the J.J. Johnson tradition, former Freddie Hubbard sideman and as co-founder of Detroit's TRIBE Records. As a leader, Ranelin has shared the bill with among others, Stanley Clarke, Christian McBride, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Smith, Pharoah Sanders and McCoy Tyner and recorded with Freddy Redd, Teddy Edwards, Art Pepper, Billy Eckstein, while appearing on Freddie Hubbard's "Mistral" Japans # 1 Jazz Record of 1980. Phil has also played many Jazz festivals around the world, including the North Sea, Montruex, Monterey, Newport, Playboy, Indy and Vera Cruz Muestra International Jazz Festivals. A Los Angeles resident since 1977, Ranelin has been designated by official resolutions as a "Rare and Valuable Cultural Treasure" and as a "Cultural Ambassador throughout the Nation and to the World audience" Phil's most recent CD INSPIRATION. continues to receive air play on Jazz radio and Ranelin's classic "Vibes From The Tribe " has become one of the Hip Hop beat makers favorite samples. Currently Ranelin is a member of the Luckman Jazz Orchestra and is involved in his own solo project with Wide Hive Records intitled "Metamorphosis"

Doug Hammond in brief :
Doug plays drums and is a percussionist. Not a thunderer, not a ricocheter, but a thorough support, a crafty signal giver, straight ahead and with muscles, sure and singing, sophisticated and naive, like it should be in jazz. It was never his intention to drum a siege upon the winter palace of jazz. And no rock morsels either. He is much more a keeper of old percussion values - an Enlightened One - far from being a fawning submission to the heritage. He's a remover, a refiner, a renewer. Nothing evaporates, much evokes: the African-American raw materials; the authority of a Baby Dodds, who Armstrong gave wings to; all of the higher obligations of black swing giants from Chick Webb to Syd Catlett; the perfection of the matador par excellance Max Roach; the potential to be the liberator of the Free Era. He has played with the likes of Sam and Dave, various Motown acts, Donald Byrd, Betty Carter, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham, Charles Mingus, Sam Rivers, Arthur Blythe, Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Jimmy Heath and many others. His 1971 Tribe album Sea of Nurnen with David Durrah is considered an underground classic. Doug has also taught for many years in Austria where he is now based. In late 2007 he released his new solo album 'A Real Deal" on Heavenly Sweetness.
