Todd Simon The United States of Dub Vol 2

We introduced our readers and listeners to Todd Simon's work in his 2012 mix for Paris DJs, 'The United States Of Dub', both showcasing some of America's best Dub producers and representing a sound that pays respect to Jamaica and the UK. Well if you enjoyed that one, you should love this volume 2… and you can also check our latest compilation 'Rise Of The Troubadour Warriors', which includes the first single of Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble!

Tracklisting :

01. The Expanders meet J. Bonner - Dub Beast
(unreleased/exclusive) info | buy LP
The Expanders are one of LA's finest 70's Rockers style/vocal harmony groups led by my cousin Devin Morrison. In addition to creating some great sounds of their own, they have backed up artists such as Alton Ellis, The Maytones, The Ethiopians, The Wailing Souls, to name a few. They've provided Paris DJ's with this exclusive dub version of their original, 'Snow Beast'. Enjoy this heavy dub!

02. Te'Amir - Battle of Adwa
(from 'L.A. Soul' album, 2011 / self-released) info | download
Te'Amir is well known as the drummer for Aloe Blacc. But there is much more to this LA gem. Te'Amir first hit LA as an accomplished photographer (along w/ vocalist/keyboardist/trumpeter little brother Maurice 'Tutu' Sweeney), and in years to come was in a premier youth Samba/Batucada Troupe that back up the Viver Brazil Dance Company. He soon found acclaim by both Mochilla and Red Bull Music Academy for his soulfully-spiritual production. Peep the amazing Mulatu remix he put together. Recently, I've had the pleasure to work with Te'Amir in my ethio-jazz project Ethio Cali. 'Battle of Adwa' is a family affair from the vaults featuring brother Tutu Sweeney on the horns and long-time comrade Dustin Warren on vocals. I hope you enjoy this treat recorded in Venice Beach at the infamous Panama House (RIP).

03. Romanowski - Sol Cumbia (Freeformer Toddy T Psycho Dub)
(from 'The Return Of Steady Rocking Romanowski & Friends' album, 2013 / Trouser Trout) info | buy
While Te'Amir was tracking drums at my studio one night, I played him a dub remix that I was working on for San Francisco Artist/DJ Romanowski. What you are about to hear is Te'Amir's first take on the drum set. No edits whatsoever!!! Nothing but pure raw energy and sounds on this one here. The second edition of my 'Psycho Dub' series…

04. Max Tannone - Kampala Truth Work
(from 'Mos Dub' album, 2010 / self released)info | download
'I had to pull this perfect dub/hip-hop mashup from NYC's Max Tannone in to the mix. Tannone's 'Kweli Dub' is the champion sound but there's something about the way he combines Mos Def's accapella with the Dub Specialist Kampala/Johnny Osbourne's 'Truth and Rights' riddim.

05. The Decoders feat. Leon Ware  - Baby This Love I Have (Adam Berg Dub mix)
(from' Dub Mixes, Vol. 1', 2013 / self-release) info | buy
Enjoy this debut dub by Adam Berg, one-third of the production team I am a part of called The Decoders. We have been busy interpreting songs from the Music Sales Catalogue (Minnie Riperton, Rotary Connection, Earth, Wind and Fire, Denise Williams, etc) with some amazing vocalists. Here is a classic of Minnie Riperton's (originally sampled by ATCQ) sang by the original co-writer Leon Ware. Dig Berg's R&B influence on his dub techniques!

06. The Lions - Roll It 'Round Dub
(unreleased, Paris DJs exclusive) info
LA Reggae Kings, The Lions, supplied me with this exclusive dub just for you! The original 'Roll It Round' is available on their Stones Throw release, 'This Generation'. But here we have yet another masterful version by engineer-extraordinaire Steve 'Sun King' Kaye!

07. David Andrew Sitek feat, Roofeeo, The Sweet & Sour Horns, Salt N Pepa & Big Youth - Shoop Lion
(from 'Shoop Lion' limited free download, 2012 / Federal Prism) info | download
Here's Dave Sitek's response to Snoop Lion. Sitek's TV On The Radio bandmate, Roofeeo, got a hold of the Salt N Pepa 12-inch. They hit up saxophonist Tracy Wannomae and I to track horns via email and in no time we put together this dub explosion!

08. NeXt LeVeL Productions feat. Black Shakespeare - Mama Earth
(from 'Sunken City' soundtrack, 2012 / Dog and Pony Show Productions) info
The LA NeXt LeVeL crew joined forces with The Lions vocalist, Black Shakespeare for this heavy track! Horns by yours truly and featuring the talented reggae drumming styles of Blake Colie (The Lions, The Decoders).

09. Ticklah - Descent
(from 'Ticklah vs. Axelrod' album, 2007 / Easy Star Records) info | buy
Back to the east coast to feature one of our generation's top dub maestros: Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah. 'Descent' features the trombone stylings of the great Aaron Johnson from Antibalas. Pure fire!

10. Beat Pharmacy - Slow Down
(from 'Constant Pressure' album, 2006 Deep Space Media) info | buy
Rounding out the set is a digital-dub treat by the South African-New Yorker, Brendon Moeller aka Beat Pharmacy. Moeller has created some very forward music including elements of Afro-Beat, Dub, Electro and more. He's worked with legends like Mutabaruka and Ursula Rucker. I was fortunate to work with Moeller while I lived in NYC. 'Slow Down' is a steady burner that opens up nicely.
