Among Brighton's finests producers are Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77, who've been collaborating together for many years now. Having one of them rework some pieces of the other's catalog seemed quite obvious, and indeed it's a great idea as this (digital) single attests. 'Medecine Chest Dub' is a haunting dub, jazz and soul blend - really groovy & funky. One that deserves a 45 release!!! The 'Skeletons Dub' on the flip sees Nostalgia 77's afro/ethio-jazz tune dripped into deep dubby waters for great psychedelic results, making you wish this meeting of the minds was a live project...

"Medicine Chest Dub"/"Skeletons Dub" is the new digital double A-side single from Prince Fatty Meets Nostalgia 77, out 24th November on Tru Thoughts. In the wake of the 'In The Kingdom Of Dub' album, the catchy yet sonically intriguing "Medicine Chest Dub" has proven a standout song, gaining heavy daytime and specialist radio play from Lauren Laverne, Don Letts, Jamie Cullum, Craig Charles and many other tastemakers, resulting in the single being added to the Official BBC 6Music Playlist. On the flip here, the more esoteric "Skeletons Dub" demonstrates the range and ambition of the LP which dropped in late September to much acclaim.
'In The Kingdom Of Dub' is a collaborative album in which the worlds of dub and jazz collide, as Prince Fatty - maverick producer of Hollie Cook and countless pop and reggae legends alongside his own Soundsystem projects - puts his spin on the music of bluesy jazz wunderkind Nostalgia 77; two like-minded musical explorers joining forces to illuminate the shared roots and spirit of rebellion at the heart of these two genres. The project has whipped up an incredible curiosity, leading to coverage in The Wire, Q, Clash, DJ Mag, The Irish Times, Songlines, Blues & Soul, Earmilk and many more. In addition to those mentioned above, radio tastemakers getting behind the album also include BBC 6Music's Steve Lamacq and Huey Morgan. A deep, energetic and transporting listen, celebrating and building upon the sonic and cultural beauty of both jazz and dub, from the marriage of these two relatively specialist scenes comes a universal sound to win over music fans of all stripes.
The "Medicine Chest" original, featuring Josa Peit's sultry vocals, was one of the most popular songs on Nostalgia 77's latest album 'A Journey Too Far', which came out in February to support including heavy BBC 6Music and Radio 2 play; Prince Fatty's dub makeover for this new project has injected a playful power while amping up its bluesy roots, resulting in an explosive and joyful jam that has put smiles on faces all over the world.
Illuminating the more freaky and far-out facet of the 'In The Kingdom Of Dub' album, the AA-side sees the dubs infiltrating the spiritual Afro-jazz of "Skeletons", the original of which is taken from one of Nostalgia 77's hugely praised instrumental side-projects, Skeletons (whose self-titled album came out in 2012).
Over the course of 'In The Kingdom Of Dub', Prince Fatty worked his magic on a diverse repertoire that spans a decade and has been lauded by everyone from Gilles Peterson, Stuart Maconie and Cerys Matthews to The Guardian and The Telegraph. Much of the source material for the album was in fact originally engineered and mixed at Prince Fatty's famous Ironworks studio in Brighton, where Benedic Lamdin (aka Nostalgia 77) has spent a lot of time over the years since meeting Mike Pelanconi (Prince Fatty) in the mid-noughties.
