Hot on the heels of their first release, Tru Thoughts' UK Sound System Culture branch Sharp and Ready is back with a new single, a big jungle/reggae tune sampling the early 1970s 'Jah Shakey/Rockers Hop' Riddim from Coxsone Dodd & Roland Alphonso. Manchester-based hip hop/jungle producer Pete Cannon join forces here with the Ghost Writerz duo we recently invited for a guest mix on Paris DJs. 'How We Living' shoud make big waves on the newly resurrected jungle scene in the UK… For a more rootsy vibe, there's also a stripped down and soulful reggae remix by main Ghost Writerz producer Sleepy Time Ghost, along with intrumental versions of both tracks. This Sharp and Ready imprint is gonna lead for sure to fantastic parties, and probably to an amazing compilation that we can't wait for!

Press Release :
16th February brings the second single from the Sharp And Ready platform, the home of the New Wave of UK Sound System Culture on Tru Thoughts recordings. The momentum of this project continues with producer Pete Cannon entering the fold, joining forces with Ghost Writerz (GWz) for the explosive Jungle tune "How We Living", which features vocals from GWz mainstays Jimmy Screech, RTKal and G.O.L.D. The single package is topped off with a classic Reggae remix from Sleepy Time Ghost.

Manchester based Pete Cannon has been unstoppable in recent years, not only producing chart hits for the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Action Bronson and Guilty Simpson, to name a few, but making his own electronic and Hip Hop music on imprints including Astral Black and High Focus. Less well known is the fact that the multi-talented beatsmith is a lifelong devotee of all things Old Skool, Breakbeat and Jungle, and has been making Jungle music behind the scenes all the while; he decided the time was right to lift the lid on this work when introduced to the Ghost Writerz, via mutual friend (and astounding MC) Dabbla.

This collaboration exemplifies what the Sharp And Ready movement is all about. Cannon enthuses, "Jungle music always seems to be coming back, but if you look, it's always been there for me. It's a massive part of the musical movement and influence over here from the '90s and has gone on to inspire everything from Garage to Grime. I mean, as a country we're doing pretty well for pioneering genres, right... and I must give a solid nod to all those that paved the way from Micky Finn to DJ Ratty."

"How We Living" is a fusion of classic old skool jungle and reggae, with a mid '90s feel from the 808 bass and the switched up and intricate use of the Amen break. Jimmy Screech, RTKal and G.O.L.D. top this cut with insights into day-to-day life in their hometowns. Jimmy and G.O.L.D being from London and RTKal repping Birmingham, the focus of the track isn't to pinpoint a single city, a single way of life - it is about how it is, living wherever you live, wherever you’re at, which underscores the UK-wide emphasis of Sharp And Ready. Each vocalist also brings a distinct style, with Jimmy's commanding flow, RTKal's charisma blazing through his tone and the pure finesse of G.O.L.D. This big energy track made its Sound System debut at Lovebox in Summer 2014, where the crowd clamoured for countless rewinds, and it is poised to become a Sound System anthem of 2015.

"How We Living (Sleepy Time Ghost Remix)" dips into classic reggae territory, showing a new side of the main Ghost Writerz producer, and nodding to his future solo releases which are set to bring serious amounts of soul. "Normally when I produce a GWz record, I'm looking to fuse various styles of Sound System Music", says Sleepy; "but I gave this the Sleepy Time Ghost treatment, where I tend to keep things more stripped and souflul. This mix goes to Jamaica - imagine a stage show at Sting, where the singers are performing one of their best-known songs. I think that's where this record is heading for GWz in years to come... it's a big one for us, one of our favourites."

This release follows directly on from Ghost Writerz’ "Back It Up" single which made a sure fire statement with support from BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens to Friction, B.Traits and Monki; 1Xtra’s Toddla T, Charlie Sloth and MistaJam; Capital Xtra’s Ras Kwame; Jamie Rodigan on BANG FM; Tom Ravenscroft on BBC 6Music, and more across the board, plus live appearances on Jamie Rodigan and Toddla T’s shows. The core duo of GWz are producer Harry 'Sleepy Time Ghost' Metcalfe and vocalist (and producer) Jason 'Jimmy Screech' Bradshaw. Both are proudly part of the Unit 137 Sound System family; many will know Jimmy from his days in Roots Manuva’s Banana Klan (with whom he toured internationally) and his solo LPs that earned props from RWD and Capital Xtra to The Independent and The Guardian.

Sharp And Ready represents a coalescing of influences and heritage with the distinct sonic and societal markers of our time, into a New Wave, carried forward by a growing contingent of passionate, talented artists. It is about telling the story of the richness and fullness of UK Sound System Culture, establishing a trusted channel from which streams of new music can flow.
