Paris DJs Playlist January 2015

The January 2015 Paris DJs Playlist - Part 1 :

Batida de Colónia - Happy Hour EP (promo CD, Büro.9 Music, 2016)

A fresh, acoustic latin cover of The Housemartins by a band we remember from their great 2013 album (listed here). Check absolutely the Büro.9 bandcamp page for more of Shareholder Tom's improbable music!

Brian Ellis - Peg (7", Austin Boogie Crew, 2015)

A modern funk all-synthesizer cover of the classic Steely Dan tune by California-based producer Brian Ellis. Thanks to Peace & Rhythm Records for the tip, that's indeed one for the bag!

Dexter Story - Wondem (LP, Soundway, 2015)

L.A.based multi-instrumentalist and producer Dexter Story's music is very unique. He integrated the Paris DJs musical universe through Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble (on the 'Rise of the Troubadour Warriors' compilation), and offered an exclusive tune from his new project Wondem, for our 5th Afro/tropical compilation 'A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand'. The album was released last october on Soundway Records, presented as "an East African-influenced mix of Ethio-Pop, Sudanese Soul & Californian Jazz". Finally we got out hands on the vinyl, this is one of he great records of 2015, and we're glad to say Dexter will be playing Ethiopian 45s at the Paris DJs 'Tour Operator' party on thursday, february 11th at Le Pigalle in Paris. Save the date.

East African Krautjazz Alliance - Tezeta (promo CD, Büro.9 Music, 2016)

Nostalgic Ethiopian jazz recorded in Köln, Germany. Yet another fassinating project from Shareholder Tom (aka Thomas Berghaus), who seems to be never short of ideas these days.

Marabout Orkestra - Seven Lives (CD, Vlad, 2015)

The Marabout Orkestra is a truly original and inspired new French band with three saxophones, guitar, drums and sousaphone. They play a blend of Ethio-jazz, afrobeat, soca, spiritual jazz and psychedelic rock, and will be on stage in Paris next saturday at the Pan Piper, along with our friends and collaborators ©© Les Frères Smith. Again, save the date. Facebook event here.

The Lions - Soul Riot (2LP, Stones Throw, 2014)

Bought this one on Juno recently — along with the Dexter Story one, thanks to a voucher offered late november by our friend and heavy supporter Laurent. Fantastic reggae from California produced by Steve Kaye (who also worked with Orgone among others) and Dan Ubick (from Connie Price & The Keystones, opening the latest Paris DJs compilation). This double LP is going to stay close to the turntable for a long time…

Tito Chicoma Y Su Orquesta - Guaguancó Con Tito Chicoma (LP+7"/CD, Abanico, 2015)

Took us quite a while to write a piece about this salsa reissue from the early 1970s, the Abanico label had sent the vinyl weeks ago already, but it was definitively worth the wait! Played the bonus 45 at the latest 'Tour Operator' gig and everyone started dancing in the lobby.
