Mebourne-based Papa Chango put out in 2012 the band a massive cinematic Ethio-funk album, 'The Matador'. After being featured in four episodes of our podcast and one of our afro compilations, they released in 2014 an epic 4-tracks EP , 'Enter The Dragonfly'. They're now back with a new great record, 'The Lost Moon of Bellaris', but be warned, the vinyl LP will be pressed at 200 copies — 72 of which are already pre-sold through a crowdfunding campaign ending on november 9…

Papa Chango offered Paris DJs the opportunity to host an exclusive full stream of this new album, which we couldn't pass on, we're big fans of their work which we described a few years back as "70’s ethio-jazz and afro-funk Morricone meets Mulatu afro-blaxploitation soundtrack". But that's also an opportunity for YOU to give this amazing band a listen if you haven't already, and grab a copy of the vinyl while stocks last!

Biography :
"Cooler than the coolest Tarrantino soundtrack" – Ethan Diamond (Founder, Bandcamp.com)

Whether you’re lulled into a trance by the dark, visceral melodies or energized by the afro-inspired rhythms
you will be moved, one way or another, by Papa Chango. With a line-up of horns, percussion, guitars, vibraphone and the mighty Farfisa organ, the Melbourne based 8-piece add a modern flavour to the sounds of the 1970’s Ethio-jazz and afro-funk movements.

Papa Chango have held down long term gigs at venues all over Melbourne including Bar Open, The Northcote Social Club and Open Studio, playing along side some of Melbourne's finest groove-merchants: The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and The Cactus Channel, amongst others. Papa Chango have also made a solid mark on the festival scene with their energy filled live shows, being return visitors to Folk Rhythm and Life, The Brunswick Music Festival and more.

In 2012 they released their album The Matador. Taking the listener on a sonic journey over barren plains and rugged terrain, The Matador is a “soundtrack to the film yet to be filmed.” Within a month of its release The Matador garnered praise globally, with tracks being included on a number of compilations and mix tapes (Paris DJs: Bag of Goodies Vol 8; Paris DJs: 21st Century Afro Spectacular), regular local radio play, and was PBS feature album in the week of it’s release.

2014 saw the release of the action packed 4 track EP, Enter The Dragonfly, which was featured on the Paris DJS compilation “Rise of the Troubadour Warriors.” and well received by local radio and the wider community. A one-inch-punch of a release bursting with kung-fury from start to finish.

2016 will see the release of their latest full-length, The Lost Moon of Bellaris. Featuring newest member Nat Grant on vibraphone and percussion, the band have let their ethio-jazz influences flow free and delivered an album that explores the darkness of space and the lightness of life. Once again, texture and form are at the fore of the release featuring 8 more tracks of cinematic, instrumental badness.
