Press Release :
Fifth in the series of 'Reggae Reworks', 'Sisters Of Soul' gathers four Grant Phabao reggae & ska remixes from the Paris DJs 'Virtual Releases' podcast, featuring a quatuor of fantastic ladies of soul from today: Dionne Charles, Josa Peit, Selah Sue and Laura Vane.

The 'Baby Charles' album released in march 2008 on the Italian Record Kicks label hasn't aged much since its release. Featuring the vocal prowess of Brighton-based soul singstress Dionne Charles, this LP was one of the highlights of 2008, alas the follow-up never happened and the band split. If Dionne has been spotted since then on some records by The New Mastersounds, Beta Hector, Black Grass, Soopasool, Milano Jazz Dance Combo or Wax Tailor, her first solo album is still expected to happen… Meanwhile here's a soulful ska dressing of a tune from that first Baby Charles album, 'Hardman To Please', only available until now as a free 128k MP3 through Paris DJs, and finally liberated here in lossless format. Hopefulle Dionne Charles will be back soon with some brand new tunes, the French reggae master Grant Phabao will do a new remix, and we'll be able to release both the new one and this 2008 one on a nice, limited piece of wax playing at 45 rpm…

Let's now head a bit forward… up to february 2012 and a friendly visit from NY-based keyboards maestro Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Nostalgia 77 & Josa Peit's 'Simmerdown' tune that Grant Phabao was working on… This really asks for more Phabao/Benevento collaborations in the future - we seriously have to work on that!!

Belgian musician and songwriter Selah Sue had a lot of press following her appearance on Cee-Lo's album 'The Lady Killer' and the release of her first, self-titled album. In most of those papers she was expressing her love of ragga and reggae, which led us to do one of those unique Grant Phabao Jamaican treatments. The resulting hip hop-ish roots reggae remix of 'Crazy Vibes' is killer material as usual, even if the singer rejected it, roughly saying 'I hate reggae, it's dancehall that I love'. Artists contradicting themselves is commonplace, we do that a lot at Paris DJs too so no hard fellings here. Just a deep and souful reggae tune…

We close up this EP with a Diesler/Laura Vane/Grant Phabao collaboration, 'Welcome To Hellmouth', originally released in 2009. A reggae/soul hybrid fit for the dancefloor which still doesn't age. Try it and you'll be amazed how people are kicking to this kind of sh*t, five years later!!
