American duo N.A.S.A. (alias Squeak E. Clean + DJ Zegon) and their amazing array of guest vocalists got the Grant Phabao reggae rework treatment twice! A first time in May 2009 when he was injecting some perfect-for-a-Friday irie type of vibes into the 'Money' single featuring no less than David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge & DJ Z-Trip, successfully turning this big big choon into a laid back, smooth grooving 100% Reggae Jam. And a second time in March 2011, adding a Jamaican dubby smile on Hip Hop feat. KRS-One, Fatlip, Slim Kid Tre, one of the coolest tributes to real hip-hop from the last years. Both remixes haven't aged much and bring nice flavors to any b-boying DJ set. Now when will N.A.S.A. come back with a new album full of tunes to rework?
Coming straight from the vaults of Paris DJs is a rare Grant Phabao remix of UK MC Ty dating from November 2006. Using the a capella from Don't What That (Knickers, Y-Fronts and Jock Straps), a single extracted from Ty's Closer album, the french dubmeister has build a complete new uptempo one drop riddim, encapsulating the original track in roots reggae flavor, 100% original Jamaican style. This remix was only downloadable for 24 hours at the time and finally gets a well-deserved free download liberation here...
Supporting our good ol' friend, doublebass player and now vinyl pressing officer Lawkyz, we couldn't pass on remixing a track from his Versus project, between hip hop, jazz, funk and blaxploitation. The band is playful and fun, sounding like early stuff from The Herbaliser with a distinguished French taste for Jazz musings. They're currently working on the follow-up to their first album from early 2012. Grant Phabao put his magic hands on the Mr Blue piece, and the result is astounding as always… Versus are immediately transported to Jamaican coasts, breakin' to hip hop while bouncing to reggae at the same time. A big smiley kind of tune.
