Ghost Writerz - Back It Up (Digital Single, Tru Thoughts, 2014)
As the first chapter of our celebration of Tru Thoughts' 15th anniversary, yesterday we posted an exclusive 30mn mix by Ghost Writerz, a duo consisting in London based producer Harry 'Sleepy Time Ghost' Metcalfe and vocalist (and producer) Jason 'Jimmy Screech' Bradshaw. Ghost Writerz is the first signing of Tru Thoughts brand new sub-label Sharp & Ready, designed to spotlight the "new wave" of artists on the UK sound system scene. 'Back It Up' is their first single on the label, a big booty-shaking bass thing that's hard to resist, all minimal & bouncy. Three different versions with various wicked MCs from the scene are available, along with the instrumental. Remixes come from Bimingham producers Aries & Gold Dubs, with an old school jungle & bass pulsating vibe, and drummer Ed West for a raving grime affair. Seriously heavy stuff!!

Ghost Writerz' "Back It Up" is the first release to blast from the bass bins of Sharp And Ready, the freshly launched platform for the New Wave of UK Sound System Culture via leading indie label Tru Thoughts. On top of the lead cut - which features G.O.L.D. & Shiffa Dan and has had upfront support from Ras Kwame on Capital Xtra to add to Toddla T, B Traits and Monki on Radio 1/1Xtra, as well as 1Xtra big guns MistaJam and Charlie Sloth - this digital package includes versions featuring MCs RTKal and Serocee plus remixes from Aries & Gold Dubs and Ed West.
Ghost Writerz (GWz) are London based producer Harry 'Sleepy Time Ghost' Metcalfe and vocalist (and producer) Jason 'Jimmy Screech' Bradshaw. Pioneers of the UK's very own Sound System Music, their work fuses Reggae, Hip Hop and Jungle with conscious lyricism, melodic hooks and virtuoso instrumentalists to create supernatural, soaring bass music. Both are proud to be part of the Unit 137 Sound System family. While many will know Jimmy from his days in Roots Manuva's Banana Klan (whom he accompanied on two major international tours) and for the solo albums that have earned props everywhere from RWD and Capital Xtra to The Independent and The Guardian, Sleepy is a relative newcomer to the scene but is already blessed with remix credits for Mr Benn (Nice Up records), DJ Vadim (BBE), and now label-mate Quantic. As those that know, know, Ghost Writerz are just getting started, with "Back It Up" their first full release on Tru Thoughts via the Sharp And Ready filter.
The original here is complemented by a terrifically strong remix package. Not only do juggling DJs get the instrumental to play with, Serocee (Toddla T, Jus Now) has provided a version that will have ravers doing the original ‘lick wood' hammering on walls and ducts in the club demanding the reload: "BANG!". That's accompanied by the incredible talent of the youth man RTKal with his rendition, "Puttin' In Work", picking up on Jimmy's key theme and bigging up the ladies that really put the werk into their twerk. Remixes come from drum and bass stalwarts, Aries and Gold, with a cold flat bassline that has been damaging dances on dubplate all over Europe already. Now it's yours. Finally, check out Ed West. Ed is a haaaaard drummer, session player for Dennis Bovell, and key man in Reggae band The Drop. He furnishes a Grime remix, which suits the track's 140 BPM, and brings another dimension to this very London sound. See full tracklist overleaf.
Sharp And Ready represents a coalescing of influences and heritage with the distinct sonic and societal markers of our time, into a New Wave, carried forward by a growing contingent of passionate, talented artists, with GWz leading the march. It is about telling the story of the richness and fullness of UK Sound System Culture, colouring in the gaps, and establishing a trusted channel from which streams of new music can flow. The brainchild of promoter and DJ Jean-Claude ‘Lionbeat' Charnier, the Sharp And Ready vision was clarified in a meeting with Tru Thoughts' Robert Luis (initially to discuss a possible deal for Congo Natty, who was being managed by Lionbeat) which revealed Luis' genuine excitement for this scene, and his existing fandom of GWz and others within it. "To find very creative people making music that you feel needs to be heard, and is capturing the moment, is great when you run a record label", Luis elaborates. "These artists are adding something important to a scene that is definitely bubbling."
With Sharp And Ready as a banner, and the internationally established label structure of Tru Thoughts as a base, GWz are ready to bring their recordings to the world. The spellbinding array of styles that the duo turn their hands to, with seriously heavy results, fuels suspicions of supernatural Sound System forces at work… Look out for more releases across the sonic spectrum, leading up to their debut full album in 2015, blessed with appearances from MCs Rodney P and Ty, and producers Pete Cannon, Deadbelly, Curtis Lynch and more.
