Press Release :
George Porter Jr., Russell Batiste Jr., and Brian Stoltz are part of the rich history that is New Orleans' musical ancestry. Today, Porter Batiste Stoltz announce the hard hitting trio's first-ever live release MOODOO, featuring special guest keyboardist Page McConnell (Phish) sitting in on select songs.

The recording offers highlights from an epic November 2, 2007 gig at Burlington, Vermont's Club Metronome, where McConnell joined PBS on stage for part of their performance. Documentation of the evening has been highly sought after by fan communities, yet there have been no known recordings of the show - until now.

MOODOO, which will be available at retail stores and online beginning September 30, documents an evening ripe with musical mojo. What else could happen when New Orleans' funk royalty blends utterly with one of Vermont's finest? Page McConnell and Russell Batiste have a musical history - playing together in Vida Blue, a band that Page formed in 2001. Most recently, Page also performed with PBS at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on the Acura Stage (main).

In conjunction with the release of MOODOO , Porter Batiste Stoltz featuring Page McConnell will perform select shows this fall. Confirmed dates include:
September 24 Revolution Hall Troy, NY
September 25 Lupo's Providence, RI
September 26 BB Kings New York, NY
September 27 Higher Ground Burlington, VT

Biography :
Their time has come at last. After spending years, even decades, providing some of the greatest backline support New Orleans music has heard, the brilliant sidemen George Porter Jr., Russell Batiste Jr., and Brian Stoltz, (Porter Batiste Stoltz) are ready for their close-up. "It's now time to focus all of our efforts on this, right here, right now," says Porter Jr. "This is where we want to be. We might be walking away from some decent projects but we believe in this and in each other."

Everyone else who hears Porter Batiste Stoltz believes, too, which is why the prospect of a new album from the group is reason to get excited. There's no denying the trio's pedigree, and their chops are miles wide and oceans deep. Porter is the original bass player for the Meters, a group that virtually defined New Orleans rockin' funk, while Batiste and Stoltz joined Porter in the latter day incarnation of that band, the Funky Meters.

"We all come from old school New Orleans," says Stoltz. "I grew up listening to the Beatles and Hendrix, but we still have that deep New Orleans background."

A few years ago, when Funky Meter Art Neville opted to go back to the band bearing his family's name, Porter Batiste Stoltz saw opportunity, not disappointment. Rather than continue on with the measured but explosive Meter-like grooves, Porter Batiste Stoltz decided to explore a little, to tinker with the foundation of their funky sound.

The result of that tinkering was a debut album, the aptly titled Expanding the Funkin' Universe (2005). "The stuff we do together can only happen with the three of us," says Batiste. "We have a deep respect for the groove. We sound like Porter Batiste Stoltz and only Porter Batiste Stoltz, that's what's so special about this band."

All the tracks on the new album begin with a great idea, and improve from there. "It's more like a funk rock kind of thing with a strong pocket," says Porter, "a bass line that connects with the drummer and allows for the rhythm stuff and the lead chords to do whatever."

The rhythms are inimitable, as only first-call New Orleans players can lay down. But they're also real songs. Stoltz, who has a songwriting background, adds greater dimension to the PBS collaborations, casting the melodies of classy pop and rock into the rawness of great R&B. "There's a big difference in our approach," says Stoltz. "We work very fast in Porter Batiste Stoltz, with the grooves coming first and finding topics to sing about later. There's more intuition and less thinking, which makes it really fun."

While their debut album offered funk, groove, fusion, rock, hyphenated style freakout, the new album, says Porter, promises to feature more focus and less wild-eyed indulgence. "We've taken a real step forward in the groove and we learned some things from the first record that's made this next one really special."

Batiste, accustomed to the more spontaneous approach in the studio, agrees: "To me it's better because we're more unified. The constructions on this album came from jams, right off the top of our heads. Now we're talking grooves!" Stay tuned for information on the next album release by Porter Batiste Stoltz.

The three funky kings have worked up musical resumes that make even those in the Crescent City envious:

GEORGE PORTER JR

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in the Meters, but he's notched sessions with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson and Tori Amos. Early in his career, Porter worked with seminal New Orleans artists like Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Lee Dorsey, and Johnny Adams. Back in 1965, Porter joined on with the Meters, considered by many to be the ultimate fusion of rock, funk and R&B, and gained recognition as one of the scene's elite bass players.

Porter's rhythmic work in the Meters in lockstep with drummer Zigaboo Modeliste was epic. Those pockets, the long notes and fat holes, provided the cushion for Leo Nocentelli or Art Neville to play or sing over and created some of R&B history's most memorable grooves.

Today, Porter features that epic bottom end in his latest collection of Porter Batiste Stoltz tunes. "It's the ultimate jam band," Porter says, "one that actually is more musical than just playing everything you know in every song. This band slaps people in the face until they see how good the stuff is!"

RUSSELL BATISTE JR

As a member of one of N'awlins legendary musical families, Russell Batiste Jr. knows his way around a sound stage. He's played multiple instruments, and has been at the drum kit since the age of four. Even before that, Russell recalls watching his daddy, David Batiste (of the city's seminal funk band David Batiste and the Gladiators), jam with an endless array of the city's most talented musicians. That band hosted a virtual "Who's Who" of '60s musicians. One of Russell's earliest memories is sitting on Jackie Wilson's knee listening to him sing "Lonely Teardrops"!

Russell joined the Funky Meters in 1989 and, like Porter, has played with a wide variety of performers, including Harry Connick Jr., Champion Jack DuPree, Robbie Robertson, and Maceo Parker. An industrious artist and creator, the busy Batiste also manages to put time into his own projects, too, like Orkestra from da Hood, who released their debut The Clinic a few years back. "I believe music is in you naturally and you just have to tap into it," he says. "It's got to be an emotional thing. When we play together in Porter Batiste Stoltz, what we do touches all three of us emotionally. That's music to me."

BRIAN STOLTZ

Brian Stoltz's playing is a perfect fusion of virtuosity, emotion, and instinct, and the combination has helped him to develop a reputation as one of New Orleans' most sought after guitar players. Stoltz originally made a name for himself with the Neville Brothers, then later the Funky Meters with Batiste and Porter. He's done session work with some of music's best, including Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Daniel Lanois, Dr. John, Edie Brickell, and Linda Ronstadt.

But in addition to his instrumental work, Stoltz has also worked as a singer-songwriter. With the release of his two solo discs, East of Rampart Street and God, Guns & Money—both efforts in the rock and pop vein—Stoltz has added skills as a songwriter, lyricist and melodicist to his repertoire. He even received a Grammy nomination in the Traditional Blues category for a track he contributed to a Mississippi Fred McDowell tribute in 2004. "For a long time I had been stereotyped as a funk guitarist," he says, "But I've always been about songs as opposed to groove or guitar."

For Stoltz, PBS is a breathtaking departure from the Funky Meters' routine. Despite its legacy, that band refrained from creating much original material. Porter Batiste Stoltz is diametrically opposite to that; it's a wellspring of spontaneous creativity, a canvas upon which all three of its very talented members can dabble with color. And often those colors combine to create gorgeous pictures.

"When we play together, there's one mind at work," says Stoltz. "It's scary sometimes. In the middle of battle, we can be doing some fierce jamming, and George and I will go to the wrong chord together. How does that happen? It only happens when you're of one mind."
PHISH: WALNUT CREEK; ALL NEW 2-DVD SET

We're thrilled to announce Phish Walnut Creek, a brand new 2-DVD set, in stores August 5th, and available for pre-order now at Phish Dry Goods.

On July 22, 1997, Phish performed the second show of their U.S. summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC through a torrent of rain, thunder and lightning. Rather than cancel the gig, the band played on with the music mirroring the peaks of the storm's intensity. Highlights include "Down With Disease" that slowly segues into "Mike's Song" - the first and only time these two classic tunes were ever paired together in such a way - as well as "Taste," complete with near Biblical thunder and lightning display.

Overall the show is remembered as a significant example of Phish's hallmark approach to group improvisation with the performances here characterized by an exceptionally democratic and refined balance of four musical voices. This 2-DVD set features more than 2 1/2 hours of 5-camera footage with 5.1 Dolby Surround or optional stereo sound.

Anyone who pre-orders the DVD from Dry Goods will receive Phish: Left Nuts, a bonus CD featuring more than 75 minutes of previously unreleased music from Phish's past performances at Walnut Creek, produced specifically for this release.
Press Release :
Original Boardwalk Style, a live album from Trey Anastasio and the Undectet, will be released on June 10th on Trey's own Rubber Jungle Records. Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative, established by Trey in 2006 to foster artistic development and support arts education in the state of Vermont.

The album was recorded at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ on December 30th and 31st of 2006, coming at the end of the band's holiday tour. The two shows marked the culmination of a long year of touring and growth as what began as a six-piece sextet in the beginning of the year had progressed into a full-force eleven member Undectet.

The raw energy of a well-oiled band at the top of its game permeated the set as the composer/vocalist/guitarist led The Undectet - comprised of Tony Hall (bass, vocals), Ray Paczkowski (keyboards), Jeff Sipe (drums), Christina Durfee (vocals, synthesizer), Jennifer Hartswick (vocals, trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (saxophone, flute), Russell Remington (saxophone, flute), Jeff Cressman (trombone), Dave Grippo (saxophone) and Cyro Baptista (percussion) - through electrifying big band arrangements of his classic songs, replete with big horns and dazzling Brazilian percussive stylings.

Original Boardwalk Style features over 75 minutes of music, remixed from the multitrack masters by Trey and Ben Collette at Rubber Jungle Studios and mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering. In addition to CD and digital download formats, the album will be available as a double-gatefold, audiophile grade 180-gram LP Vinyl pressing.
Press Release :
Bernie Worrell is set to release Improvisczario on September 11th, 2007, with a little help from his friends as Warren Haynes and Mike Gordon make guest appearances on Worrell's new instrumentals record.

Los Angeles, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire/PRWEB ) August 21, 2007 -- Bernie Worrell finally releases the instrumentals record he has long dreamt of on September 11th, 2007 with Improvisczario.

The jazz/funk/rock recording is anchored by the rhythm section of Will Calhoun (Living Colour) on drums and bassist Brett Bass. There are also some incredible turns by two legends of contemporary music. Guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Bros.) guests on two of the tracks, and Mike Gordon (Phish) showcases the banjo on yet another. Meanwhile, Worrell glides over top, moving effortlessly from Baby Grand Piano, to Hammond B3, to Clavinet, to Wurlitzer. He even takes a turn on Thelonious Monk's old Celeste piano.

Raised in Plainfield, NJ, Bernie Worrell was a classically trained pianist at three years old. Throughout his childhood he played with symphonies and orchestras, and even wrote his own concerto at the age of eight. Slowly, he listened to the radio and discovered sounds other than classical, and when he went to college, he played with a number of bar bands, including the Tavares (who were known as Chubby & the Turnpikes back then). It was also around this time that Worrell met George Clinton, who was the vocalist for a Motown-influenced group called the Parliaments. The Parliaments soon split up and moved to Detroit, where Clinton re-formed them into a new group, called Parliament. Clinton then formed another side band, called Funkadelic, several of whose members had been in Parliament but were now performing under the new name due to contractual glitches. Worrell joined Funkadelic in 1970, beginning with their album Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow. He was an essential part of the P-Funk mob and continued to play with them right up until the early '80s. He then joined the Talking Heads as a session man and went on tour with them throughout the '80s, basically working with David Byrne and the band right up to their split in early 1992. Besides his solo career, Worrell continues to work with members of the P-Funk, including Bootsy Collins. His work on such songs as "Flashlight," "(Not Just) Knee Deep," and "Cosmic Slop" influenced not only other R&B/soul artists but also many rap groups, who continue to sample his work in their own songs.

Worrell will also release an additional record on September 11th (Baby Elephant), as well as a documentary film on October 9th (Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth) . Baby Elephant finds the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer teaming up Prince Paul and Newkirk. Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth features interviews with Worrell friends and former band mates such as George Clinton, David Byrne, and Mos Def.
Press Release :
A Three CD Set Documenting A Month Long Residency At The Late Great NYC Music Mecca, Tonic.

Marco Benevento is best known as one half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, the acclaimed instrumental indie rock, post jazz experimentalists, who've earned a legion of fans performing at high profile events like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival and Bonnaroo, while drawing rave reviews at publications ranging from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork. Holding court behind a dizzying array of vintage keyboards, upright and toy pianos, pedals, samplers and other circuit bent gadgets, Benevento has established a reputation as one of the most visionary young keyboardists to emerge in the last decade.

Beyond all the accolades and hype, however, is a supremely-inspired, ever-curious 29-year old artist whose spirit remains rooted in the musicians he studied under and played alongside when first starting out; teachers like Kenny Werner, Billy Hart, Brad Mehldau and Joanne Brackeen and band-mates like Bob Moses, Ari Hoeing, Terreon Gully, Adam Dietch and DJ Olive. It's exactly that innocent childlike desire to play the piano and unbridled passion for musical exploration which led Benevento to set up shop every Wednesday in November 2006 for a residency at Tonic, the recently shuttered New York City improvisational music Mecca.

"For these shows, I decided I was going to invite some of my closest friends along to play and we'd just let the music go where it wanted. I've always thought that if you think too much about something, there winds up being this hesitation that throws the whole 'universal timing' balance off. With improvised music you want to let the music play you, so that's the approach we took," explains Benevento. "When you think of an improvised performance as 'something you don't play' you may wind up with a better mind set. That concept paired with the fact that my friends are my biggest musical inspiration, completely allowed the music to come to life. The entire month of November is a brilliant memory."

Inspired by Ropeadope's recent release Christian McBride ("Live at Tonic"), Benevento invited his old friend Andy Hurwitz (Ropeadope label boss) along to document the proceedings. Alternating between group and solo performance, Benevento played two sets a night and was joined by a different cast of musical co-conspirators for each show. The line-ups included a trio with bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Matt Chamberlain, a duo with bassist Mike Gordon, a drum group with percussionists Bobby Previte, Mike Dillon and Joe Russo and a free play quartet with trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Claude Coleman. The repertoire, while always based in improvisation (including a number of pieces created on the spot), drew from Benevento's own compositions, as well as, classics ranging from Pink Floyd's "Fearless" to Benny Goodman's "Moonglow" to Leonard Cohen's "Seems So Long Ago Nancy" to Thelonious Monk's "Bye Ya".

The highlights will be released August 7 by Ropeadope on three discs of wide-eyed, daringly fierce and cosmically joyous music entitled "Marco Benevento: Live At Tonic".
Press Release :
On July 24, composer, bandleader and guitarist Trey Anastasio will release his new album The Horseshoe Curve via his own Rubber Jungle Records on both CD and limited pressing Vinyl. Instrumental from start to finish, The Horseshoe Curve showcases Anastasio's Afro-Cuban-influenced improvisations, replete with five-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple percussionists, and of course, Anastasio's soulful, nimble guitar work. The Horseshoe Curve is a journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that Anastasio has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade.

The Horseshoe Curve was recorded with producer Bryce Goggin at The Barn, Anastasio's studio complex in Vermont, as well as Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY. Alongside Anastasio, the band includes sax players Dave Grippo, Peter Apfelbaum and Russell Remington; trumpeter Jen Hartswick, trombonist Andy Moroz, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, drummer Russ Lawton, percussionist Cyro Baptista and bassist Tony Markellis.

Everyone who preorders The Horseshoe Curve will also receive The Lucius Beebe EP, a five-song live CD which includes guest appearances by Jon Fishman, John Medeski and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra.
Page's much anticipated debut solo album combines the signature heartfelt vocals, memorable musical hooks, and complex animated improvisations that made his contributions to Phish so vital. McConnell worked closely throughout with engineer and co-producer Jared Slomoff, drummer Jon Fishman and guitarist Adam Zimmon. Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio also make significant contributions. The album was recorded in Vermont and Brooklyn between January 2005 and June 2006 and was mixed by Bryce Goggin.

Page McConnell is the self-titled debut album from Phish keyboardist Page McConnell. It was recorded over a two-year period following the demise of Phish. The album was produced by Bryce Goggin and Jared Slomoff. It will be released on April 17, 2007.

Legacy Recordings will release Page McConnell, the much anticipated debut solo album from the keyboardist/songwriter, on April 17. The album is available for pre-sale now.

Page composed nine new pieces for this first solo album, which introduces fascinating new musical facets and lyrical concerns from an ever-evolving artist. Page McConnell combines the signature heartfelt vocals, memorable musical hooks, and complex animated improvisations that made his contributions to Phish so vital.

McConnell says of the album, "I started working on it about two years ago, not with an end goal in mind, but for the joy of the process. As the project evolved, I realized the songs held together as a body of work with some recurring themes, especially that of new beginnings. The last few years have been a time of great personal and professional transition, and I think that's reflected in the album."

The album was recorded in Vermont and Brooklyn between January 2005 and June 2006 and was mixed by Bryce Goggin, who first worked with McConnell in 1999 as producer on Phish's Farmhouse. Press Release :
We're delighted to announce Colorado '88, a three-CD set of recordings compiled from Phish's seminal tour of the Rocky Mountain State, available now for pre-order, with a Halloween release date. Mastered from the original analog cassette tapes, Colorado '88 contains recordings of songs that, until now, have not been widely traded or heard with such clarity. Several of the tracks found in the collection have never before appeared on an official Phish release.

Having conquered the New England college club circuit, Phish embarked on a storied adventure West. The band played seven shows in ten days to tiny crowds in small bars and restaurants in the ski towns of Telluride and Aspen. Colorado '88 culls, in chronological order, the best of those shows, providing a vivid glimpse into the days before the three and four-night stands at amphitheatres and arenas that would distinguish Phish in the years to come.

The material on Colorado '88 depicts the young band at one of the heights of their characteristic adventurousness. From extended forays into their Gamehendge mythology to classic and obscure covers, to cult gems, Colorado '88 includes much of the hard-to-find early Phish that die-hards have sought after for years. The release gives fans the chance to share the experience of hearing the band in such an intimate setting.

Colorado '88 is available now for pre-order exclusively from Phish Dry Goods and will also be offered for track-by-track download, along with five bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere, from LivePhish.com. For a complete tracklisting and to pre-order Colorado '88, click here.
Press release :
Bar 17, the new album from Trey Anastasio, will be released on October 3, 2006. All pre-orders will include the mini-album 18 Steps.

Bar 17 marks Trey's second solo album in just under a year as he continues his evolution as guitarist, songwriter and improvisationalist to create a kaleidoscopic yet cohesive listening experience, one of his most remarkable albums to date.

Recorded on and off over the past three years in a variety of locations including Trey's famed Barn recording studio in Vermont and co-producer Bryce Googin's (Phish, Pavement) Trout Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Joining Trey in the studio were musicians from all eras of Trey's career including members of Phish and various incarnations of Trey's solo band, string players from his "Seis De Mayo" project and longtime collaborator John Medeski along with new friends avant-groovesmiths Benevento/Russo Duo, singer Carmen Keegan (I Nine) and Joan Wasser (Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls).

A musical chameleon at heart, Trey continues to immerse himself comfortably in a variety of sonic environments. Beginning with the familiar sound of Mike Gordon's basswork on the dynamic opening track "Host Across the Potomac", Trey touches on Stones Exile-era riffing ("Dragonfly" and "Mud City") and thrilling guitar solos on the title track and "What's Done", as well as the structured-improv crowd favorite "Goodbye Head" and the expanded instrumentation of "Cincinnatti".
Rare surprises include a New Year's gag that includes a cover of Collective Soul's "Shine" sandwiched within "Fly Famous Mockingbird" and a mind-bending cover of "Drowned" from The Who's Quadrophenia.

Formed at the University of Vermont in 1983, Phish (Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell) quickly became heirs to the jam band tradition, taking the roots of musical improvisation to a new level. After a dozen studio albums and countless tours, Phish disbanded in 2004.
Ouf! On a eu peur. Mike Gordon - "Soul Food Man"
(3,1 Mo 128 kbps MP3)
