Press Release :
What PitchforkMedia.com has to say about Mushroom:
"Mushroom tossed the analog weirdness of Füxa, and the jagged experimentalism of Can into a dark, smoking concoction alongside acid-fried Funkadelic, Jack Johnson-style Miles Davis and even some groove-addled Medeski, Martin & Wood. The result was some of the most instantly accessible outrock around, exploratory, up and infectious. It's rich and trippy party music for ass and head".

What The San Francisco Bay Guardian has to say about Eddie Gale:
"The vibe is so 1969-inner peace-astrological-cosmic-love-futurist-spiritual that when I was done listening, I just lay back knowing everything was everything and the creator has a master plan. The music is full of fun and optimism, and after surfing international news for an hour this morning, I'd give anything to be back in Brooklyn during the summer of '69, sitting in some park listening to Gale".

As if San Francisco-based psychedelic kraut-rock, indie-jazz experimentalists Mushroom didn’t have the ability to transport listeners to the furthest recesses of the mind with their own powers, on this latest album, Joint Happening, they’ve joined forces with none other than avant-jazz legend, cutting-edge trumpet visionary Eddie Gale, best known for his classic 1969 Blue Note album Black Rhythm Happening. Mushroom provides Gale with the foundation for some of the most ghostly and haunted improvisations of his career. With Mushroom’s tribal and hypnotic rhythms morphing and melting textures behind the trumpeter, the results can be described as freak jazz. Imagine 70's Miles Davis jamming with Can and Crazy Horse. Joint Happening is indeed 70-minutes worth of a stoned happening.
Press Release :
Space rock / psychedelic jazz groovers Mushroom join forces with singer/songwriter Alison Faith Levy, known for her own albums (with members of Camper Van Beethoven) and as a member of the Loud Family (featuring Scott Miller of Game Theory).

With Mushroom, Alison soars soulfully into another realm - that one reviewer described as "The Space Rock Eartha Kitt". Previous reviews of Alison's solo material have said:

"Alison Faith Levy, like her fellow San Franciscan Mark Eitzel, seeks to reconcile 1960's pop loveliness with the bleakness of the coming millenium." - SnackCake Magazine

"in one song, Levy's hypnotic voice slithers through her band's undulating fields of neopsychedelic rhythm, in another it moans over an acoustic blues; the music on her CD owes something to Dylan, Pink Floyd and late Beatles, but Levy's voice and sardonic, eloquent lyrics are all her own." - East Bay Express

On this new CD, Mushroom with it's ever expanding and changing line up includes:

Guitarist and vocalist (via his special megaphone) Josh Pollock - who has had the good fortune to collaborate with the likes of John Cale and Flea (both at the Patti Smith-curated Meltdown Festival in London), as well as Damo Suzuki, Kevin Ayers, and Gong mastermind Daevid Allen, with whom he's recorded the latest Gong album, plus five CDs with their band Daevid Allen's University Of Errors, and two CDs with that unholy hybrid of Gong and Japanese psych-terrorists Acid Mothers Temple, Acid Mothers Gong.

University of Errors' bassist Michael Clare plays on several songs. When not playing percussion for Mushroom, Dave Mihaly can be found on stage and in the studio with country/folk star Jolie Holland.

On a couple of songs, Seth Augustus is featured on The Igil, a traditional Tuvan instrument.

Guitarist Tim Plowman recorded several albums for SST Records with his band Slovenly. Multi-instrumentalist Erik Pearson has most recently been working with Billy Talbot of (Neil Young and) Crazy Horse on Billy's solo project, while saxophonist and general handy man Ralph Carney spent much of his previous life as a member of Tom Waits band in-between sessions and gigs with Marc Ribot, Hal Wilner, the B-52's and Jonathan Richman.

On their album "Yesterday, I Saw You Kissing Tiny Flowers" - Alison Faith Levy & Mushroom take you on a journey to the centre of your mind- led by Mushroom drummer and producer Pat Thomas.
Alison Faith Levy & Mushroom – Gas, Grass Or Ass – Nobody Rides For Free
(CD-Single) 4 Zero Records FZ002, 2007-02-05

Review :
Whoa! A new Mushroom release is always a BIG event in my book. I've already warned my fellow friend and collegue Mr Moo (the only other current psychedelic music specialist in France I know) that I had received their new single, extracted from an upcoming album, his answer was immediate and crystal clear: "You bastard!". Not that Mr Moo will ever hate me, he just knows about Mushroom, their incredible recordings to sip acid too, and the collectability of all their releases.

This CD-Single is like the rest of their discography: HARD TO FIND. A hundred copies only were pressed, and most of those were sent to DJs and reviewer, so I don't think he'll buy this one easily on Amazon. Very specialized record shops might carry it or order it for you, shops such as Bimbo Tower near Bastille in Paris for example (who also carry the Rather Interesting releases from Atom Heart when they're issued... contact them on bimbo.tower.free.fr).

The album, "Yesterday, I Saw You Kissing Tiny Flowers", should be released soon (mid-May)... We'll keep you up-to-date with the latest info don't worry.

The opening track of the single is a groovy psychedelic soul jazz ride, with organ, flute, drums, percussions and saxophone, all jamming like furious Wacky Racers while Alison Faith Levy is preaching in the background. Now that's what I call "I can't wait for the album" pressure! Exclusive to this release, previously unreleased bonus tracks are rare live recordings from 2002 and 2004, two softer jam-jazz pieces, more of a end-of-trip thing. You can hear people chatting in the background, so we can guess it's all small venues.
Press Release :
"Jabs of flute cluster alongside churning organ and splintered Rhodes Piano...clattering drums have an automaton rotary action that sometimes recalls Can" - Q magazine

"Combines the virtuosity of the Canterbury scene and ability to blow like Miles or Coltrane with certain overtones of the great Krautrock bands. At their zenith, they recall the classic acid rock jamming sounds that made their San Francisco home town so famous" - Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine

"Some of the best space jams heard since Loop and The Spacemen 3 glided across the squelchy fields of the Reading Festival in 1989." – Mojo

who: Mushroom
where: San Francisco
when: the late 1990's

what: inspired by a wide variety of sources, the members of Mushroom (who had previously worked with a wide range of artists including Mr. Bungle, Eugene Chadbourne, Absolute Grey, the Mommyheads, Don Was, Flamin' Groovies, Sneetches, to name but a few).....come together to play original all-instrumental music that recalled everything from the Canterbury sounds of Soft Machine and Caravan to the acid-psych of the Filllmore West to the wide landscape of 1970's German rock.

"Reinventing the magical moments from times is all the rage, but Mushroom are a band living it. These guys are San Franciscan experimentalists who like to indulge in a spot of psychedelic soul searching. Explore." - Straight No Chaser

This collection of previously unreleased vintage live recordings is titled "Really don't mind if you sit this one out" - and drawn from Mushroom's first year and half of their career, from June 1997 to November 1998. Although the band later expanded into different line-ups, including horn players, multi-percussionists and jazz/groove music - this disc really focuses on the psych-space-rock roots of Mushroom and who better to describe those early days of Mushroom - than Steve Wynn, the founder of the legendary psychedelic guitar band, the Dream Syndicate:

"Los Angeles is my place of birth. New York is my adopted home. But, San Francisco is the city I visit when I want to return to the beatnik roots I never had. Dreams of Ferlinghetti, Lenny Bruce and Miles Davis spin around my head as I stomp thru North Beach, crawl thru the Lower Haight, flying on some wild combination of bourbon, sleeplessness and the freaky sounds and sights that beckon from every bar.

"The summer of 1997 was no exception as I emerged from a self-imposed haze into a dark dingy bar called the Make Out Room somewhere in the Mission district. Local hipsters were scattered about like some kind of barometer of a cool yard sale. There was some members of American Music Club in one corner, members of Pavement in another. I think I even spotted Jorma Kaukonen of the Airplane quietly digging the scene..... I knew I was in the right place at the right time.

"Before too long I was ignoring the hip surroundings, the attending royalty, the trippy lights and focused on the music. Musical references were being tossed so quickly, one minute it was Miles Davis' 'Agharta', the next minute Faust, the next minute 1970's King Crimson, one after another, until the influences didn't matter..... I turned off my mind, relaxed and floated downstream (to paraphrase some other hipster) and then my mind split open (to quote another).

"The band announced that the next number would be 'The Reeperbahn' and before I could rev up the memory machine, of nights spent in Hamburg over the years, my rational mind was put on a cosmic back burner as the band played what seemed like a 10-hour piece (I later learned it was only 52 minutes - the version on this album is a mere 18 minutes, I'm afraid). They followed that with several other songs including 'Kyle Loves a Funny Bunny' - and then after 3 hours and 38 minutes, the band had finished their set."
"Not just another blaxploitation soundtrack compilation, this is a collection of music taken from 1970s X-rated African-American films and made available for the first time anywhere. These X-rated films feature less 'by the numbers' funk and more improvised grooves and 'avant garde' textures than the typical blaxploitation soundtracks. Using mainly jazz musicians from Oakland, CA (where many of these films were made), these recently uncovered master tapes (and the 16 pages of color photos) are sure to delight your eyes and ears."

Mushroom - "Glazed Popems"
(Black Beauty 2004)
