Press Release :
Keller Williams has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house-all by himself. So why now, after fifteen-years as a solo artist, is he releasing a live album-simply titled, Live-with three other names on the cover? It turns out that since he first picked up a guitar, this troubadour has wanted to front a band.

On Live (September 16, 2008 / SCI Fidelity Records), Keller taps into the world-class talent of Keith Moseley (bass - The String Cheese Incident), Gibb Droll (guitar - Marc Broussard, Brandi Carlile), and Jeff Sipe (drums - Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon). The musical horsepower of four friends playing together on stage proves stronger than even Keller had dreamed. Recorded at select live shows during a winter 2008 tour, and featuring seventeen tracks that span Keller's career, Live is a testament to how a band, with the right chemistry and chops, can take a song to places even the writer couldn't have imagined.

"What a treat after so many years of being in control," Williams says. "The band has a knack for hanging a sharp left that I don't see coming." As the principal singer/songwriter, Keller may be driving this musical train, but he doesn't always know where it's headed. Williams puts unyielding faith in Moseley, Droll, and Sipe's ability to sustain the conversation. And, as with every live recording worth a damn, the audience is an integral part. On Live the crowd sizzles with energy; they know they're witnessing something special.
Before Keller Williams hits the road this summer, he'll release a live, February 8, 2006 Grateful Grass performance. The digital only release, titled REX (Live at the Fillmore), will be available beginning April 29, 2008. Grateful Grass - which featured Williams, Keith Moseley (The String Cheese Incident), and Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band) - performed not-so-traditional bluegrass versions of Grateful Dead favorites one winter night in Denver. The vibe in the packed house was thick and sweet; the crowd was whisper quiet, when they weren't singing along. 100% of the proceeds from REX (Live at the Fillmore) will go to benefit The Rex Foundation, the charitable non-profit started by the Grateful Dead which gives grants to worthwhile causes.
Press Release :
Keller Williams has been called guitar's mad-scientist, a one-man band for the new millennium, and dozens of other clever sobriquets dreamed up by fans and music journalists trying to get a handle on his uplifting and ever-shifting style of music. Though Keller's music has evolved since he first started playing music over twenty years ago, some things have remained constant: Keller is a prolific artist, an exceptional guitarist, and an accomplished songwriter. Now, Keller's twelfth album release looks back at a ground-breaking and already remarkable career. Aptly titled 12 , the album features one standout song from each of his previous eleven releases. Keller himself dubs this his album of "hitless greatest hits". Added to the mix is one new, previously un-recorded song. While the Keller Williams adventure has only just begun, 12 is a fantastic celebration of a musical milestone. Look for 12 in stores on December 18, 2007 on SCI Fidelity Records.

iTunes shoppers will be showered in exclusive bonus content along with their purchase of the 12 album. In addition to a bonus digital booklet with images and liner notes they will also receive an unreleased exclusive video performance of "Life", featuring Keller playing the song while sitting along side a stream in his home state of Virginia. Also available on December 18th for separate purchase is a performance of "Restraint" from the same location. Check out Keller's iTunes video page to preview the performance of this deep track from dream starting on December 18.

Also this fall, Keller Williams and The WMD'S will tour the east coast. The WMD'S features Williams on guitar/vocals, Keith Moseley on bass (The String Cheese Incident), Gibb Droll on guitar (Marc Broussard), and Jeff Sipe on drums (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Trey Anastasio, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Lesh). The WMD'S debuted at select festival performances this past summer, including an epic and electrifying Bonnaroo show. Their November run of shows brings them to indoor venues for headlining shows.
Keller Williams - Live at The Aggie Theatre, Ft. Collins, CO
2007-12-01
An intimate evening of music comprised of cover songs and a few new originals.
In the weeks before the show, Williams solicited a handful requests from his fans online and to run through an incredible range of material at his gig.

The night began the guitarist's trademark medley of Phish's "Runaway Jim" and "Run Like an Antelope" and included such eclectic covers as the Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street", "Jack Straw", "Wharf Rat" and "Eyes of the World", Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing", Peter Rowan's "Thirsty in the Rain", the Bee Gees' "Night Fever", G. Love's "Back of the Bus", the Replacements' "Bastards of Young", the Beatles' "I Dig a Pony", Widespread Panic's "Space Wrangler", Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright", Led Zeppelin's "Dancing Days", Sublime's "What I Got", Presidents of the United States of America's "Lump", AfroMan's "Tumbleweed", Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", a package of The Butthole Surfers' "Pepper" and Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" and Ani DiFranco's "Out of Range".
Williams also nodded to his friends Yonder Mountain String Band by covering their "Steep Grades, Sharp Curves" first set and "New Horizons" second set. The night ended with a version of Prince's "Kiss" and an encore of the original "Freshies" of his new compilation album 12.
Biography :
Before embarking on dream, Keller Williams' newest, most rewarding recording project, he scratched out a wish list of artists he'd like to collaborate with in the studio. Because Williams, a restless troubadour, has been a fan of and tour mate with so many excellent musicians, his list of names—including lots of musicians he admires most—ran long and ambitious. "It was a totally unrealistic vision", he says. "The idea was that all we could do was ask, and the worst they could do was say 'No.'" The amazing thing is, the musicians he asked didn't say "No". And that's how Keller's dream came true. Partial to one-word titles, Williams coined the album because it best described the experience. "That's what this record was", he says. "It was incredibly rewarding".

Of course, when your dream team consists of outsized talents like Bob Weir, Béla Fleck, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Victor Wooten, The String Cheese Incident, Steve Kimock, and more, well, you're going to encounter an obstacle or two. Scheduling snags held up completion of the album for nearly three years. It took Weir a year to find a date for Keller, but when he did, and he invited Keller into his home studio to do "Cadillac", Keller found himself living, well, another dream. Likewise for his work with Béla Fleck. Keller and Béla began their collaboration, "People Watchin'", in the summer of 2004 but it wasn't finished until two years later. In fact, since this project began, Keller released the double live, Stage (2004), the DVD, Sight (2005), and most recently a bluegrass record, Grass (featuring Larry and Jenny Keel), not to mention hundreds of gigs.

But Keller never gave up on his dream. Armed with gentle persistence and plenty of patience, he slowly but surely started to realize his vision, accumulating a star-studded array of recording partners as the magnitude of the project became increasingly clear. "To be honest, I wasn't really thinking about public opinion for this record", Keller admits. "It was all for me. Mostly I just wanted to be able to crank these songs up in my pimped-out golf-cart when I'm 80. Some of these artists are living legends and will be appreciated long after we're gone. I'm extremely proud right now, but I'll be even more ecstatic when I'm older and can look back on this record and wonder, 'How the hell did that happen?'"

Dream is miraculous in more than just a logistical sense. To begin with, the material, 16 tracks in all, is unblemished; a cataract of electrifying musical alliances. With Williams' rapturous innovations and his earthy, barefoot-in-the-park presentation as an anchor, songs like "Celebrate Your Youth" (with his pals in Modereko) and the riveting "Ninja of Love" (with Michael Franti) emerge in an endless fount of mesmerizing entertainment.

Because a handful of his collaborators were six-stringers, many of these tracks find Keller moving his own guitar responsibilities into the shadows, sometimes even picking up the bass instead, which, incidentally he plays surprisingly well. "When you bring in guitar players like Kimock, Hunter, Scofield, and Fareed Haque", he says, "it doesn't make sense to compete with them. I've always had this dream that I would be the bass player in a power trio with Steve Kimock". On the magical instrumental "Twinkle" he fulfills that dream as well. "The power trio vision was a short-lived one, but it became a reality".

On "Kiwi and the Apricot", Williams' acoustic rhythms provide a bed for Charlie Hunter's ample eight-string punctuations. "Charlie came in, heard the song and said, 'OK, this is how we're gonna do it,' which is exactly what I wanted.

Which is another one of dream's miraculous qualities: Assembling such luminous talent is one thing. Feeding them challenging material is another. Williams refers to his customary writing MO as simple. "Normally, my stuff is like verse/verse/bridge/chorus, verse/bridge/chorus. But in order to be interesting to a world class player like Victor Wooten—a guy who plays 50 to 60 songs by Béla Fleck, complex compositions all infused with classical training—I needed to come up with something a little bit more, uh, difficult".

For starters, Keller didn't send any charts or advance tips to his collaborators, choosing instead to let them come up with stuff on their own. Some songs were written specifically for his partners, some were songs that have resided in Williams' repertoire for years, finally getting a shot at ultimate renditions of those songs. Keller wrote tunes expressly for Weir and Franti, for example, but he let Scofield take a whack of his own at "Got No Feathers", which also features Wooten on bass and Jeff Sipe on drums. "John does so many things, I really didn't know what I was going to get", Keller says. "But he settled right in and like all great musicians he made it his own pretty much instantly".

Many of the songs on dream have been shaped and reshaped countless times through Williams' own acclaimed performances. Known, of course, for his astonishing one-man show, he surrounds himself with instruments and pedals and slides from one to the next. While the tunes are rooted in Williams' warm voice and spirited acoustic guitar, he gives them depth and breadth via looping and delay. Soon he was accompanying himself, looping several instruments, and filling up an entire room with lush layers of sound … just one man and a humongous imagination.

Keller's been refining this kind of performance art for almost 15 years, logging over 100 gigs annually, and he's a productive recording artist as well. dream is Williams' ninth studio release so far. He began recording in earnest back in 1993, after serving time in cover bands in high school and college. He got his first big break in 1997 when The String Cheese Incident gave Keller, a Fredericksburg, Virginia native, an opening slot on their tour, after he volunteered to do it for free. From that point, Williams began to grow an audience of his own, gradually winning fans through non-stop grassroots touring, beguiling performances, and talented and entertaining recordings. His calling card? A creative combination of talent and technology. Dream serves as a culmination of that approach.

"I can only hope that the people who've followed my career this far, the audiences and the taping community, are as thrilled about this project as I am", he says. "From my perspective as a fan, to be able to work amid such greatness was very humbling and it made dream an amazingly human experience".
Review :
Keller Williams, one of the most (if not the most) talented guitarist/entertainer from the last ten years, is still a complete stranger to France. He played in Paris a huge total of 30 minutes, between 7:00PM and 7:30PM, opening for a shitty Michael Franti show some two years ago. At least 30 people have seen him that day... :) He's just self-released a new album, recorded in two days in August 2005 with Larry Keel (guitar) and Jenny Keel (half-sized bass). You can order it through all cool online record stores, you know, the ones who do the job of selling everything you really wanted, cheap and fast...
Included are lotsa nice and surprising cover versions, as usual: Pink Floyd ("Another Brick In The Wall"), Tom Petty ("Mary Jane's Last Breakdown"), Mother Hips ("Stunt Double"), The Grateful Dead ("Loser" and "Dupree's Diamond blues"), Yonder Mountain String Band ("New Horizons"), and Karl and Harty ("I'm Just Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail", a bluegrass classic and an old-time Jerry Garcia favorite). Our advice is simple: don't miss this new slice of acoustic sunshine dried up in progressive bluegrass, and get your hands on Keller Williams' "Sight" DVD... Djouls
Press Release :
Keller Williams' self released album GRASS is a delightfully bizarre collection of anything-but-traditional bluegrass songs. Like most recordings from Keller, GRASS is self indulgent and possibly offensive to those who lack a sense of humor, but Keller had a damn good time recording it.
For the project Keller teamed up with old buddy and award-winning flat picker Larry Keel on guitar, and Larry's beautiful rock-solid in-the-pocket acoustic bass playing wife, Jenny Keel. The result is an organic and airy acoustic record featuring 10 songs, originals and unexpected cover tunes, that yield to a pure love of music. GRASS makes it better.
Keller Williams - "Stage"
(Sci-Fidelity 2004)

Keller Williams - "Love Handles", "Tubular" & a few live tracks...
