Press Release :
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey re-awakens on April 8 with Lil Tae Rides Again, their most experimental, idiosyncratic and mind-expanding album yet. The new recording--the band's fourth on HYENA Records and first studio effort in three years--will surprise even those predisposed to JFJO's mercurial nature. Electronic music eccentric Tae Meyulks was called upon to produce. He and JFJO tracked, arranged, mixed and mastered the album at his Tulsa studio over the course of 2007. Additionally during this period, founding members Brian Haas and Reed Mathis amicably parted ways with longtime drummer Jason Smart, filling the slot with 22-year old Josh Raymer. The 11 tracks on Lil Tae Rides Again find the Tulsa-based trio sculpting ambient soundscapes characterized by dreamlike atmospherics, minimalist melodies and subliminally diametrical themes.

"The entire record was made in a 100-plus year old warehouse in the oldest part of Tulsa called The Bricks. The warehouse itself is completely stuck in time and is an eerie museum of random artifacts dating back to the early 1900s. Just walking into this space fills you with a strange feeling of paranormal activity. The walls speak of many lives come and gone," explains Haas. "All of these unique factors influenced the music. Reed, Josh and I had been listening to a lot of Boards of Canada, Panda Bear, Brian Eno, Susumu Yokota, things like that. Tae Meyulks has an immense interest in the psychedelic effects of sleep deprivation. He'd stay up for days at a time operating this difficult music software in various altered-states, while deconstructing and reassembling what we'd recorded."

After finishing 2006 with two sold out shows at The Blue Note in New York City, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey went on hiatus. They appeared for only a handful of select tour dates and summer festivals in 2007. Rumors circulated among fans regarding the trio's decision to curtail its touring schedule. Brian Haas virtually disappeared from the national music scene. Reed Mathis, on the other hand, was ubiquitous, playing bass with the likes of Steve Kimock, Marco Benevento and The Greyboy Allstars. Internally, however, JFJO’s future was never in question. Haas and Mathis simply took the band underground to create music on their own terms, in their own universe and on their own timetable.

"This was an experience we needed to have. Tae Meyulks completely took us through the looking glass. We were almost like helpless little babies in his arms," states Mathis. "From the first day, right up until the record was done, I can honestly say I had absolutely no idea what the result would sound like. I thought I'd been through a process of discovery before, but this was a whole other thing. Because of that, we're more proud of it than anything we've ever done."

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey vows to maintain a higher profile in 2008. A West Coast tour to coincide with the release of Lil Tae Rides Again is scheduled for April. It will culminate with a handful of performances in New Orleans during Jazzfest. Tours of the Midwest, East Coast and Europe are in the works for later in the year. Additionally, JFJO are already planning the follow-up to Lil Tae Rides Again, which will be produced by Reed Mathis.

As has been their method since first forming over 14 years ago, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey define themselves through a constant state of re-imagining their creative horizons. The beauty in JFJO’s self-definition is that they are utterly un-definable. Lil Tae Rides Again, but better still, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey rides again.

Info :
Marco Benevento's debut studio album Invisible Baby was released this past Tuesday. If we don't say so ourselves, it's hands down one of the best records to come out in the first half of in 2008. Marco is joined by Reed Mathis on bass and Matt Chamberlain and Andrew Barr on drums. Pick up a copy here and now!

Here's some of the nice stuff that's being said...

"The new Benevento record will appeal to fans of Thelonious Monk, Air, Radiohead and Phish...tunes like 'Bus Ride' and 'Are You The Favorite Person Of Anybody' are ambient soundscapes winking at the psychedelic." - New York Press

"Benevento is something of an iconoclast on the piano. He knows his Monk and his Basie, but he prefers to play like a rock star, bashing power chords into the ivories and hooking up with others who straddle the rock-jazz line. Is it jazz? Is it rock? Hard to say, but it hardly matters." - The Boston Globe

"Invisible Baby is an eight track masterpiece." - The Late Greats

"Invisible Baby will twist your synapses, feed your head, and turn on your love light. It will, in short, make you feel glad to be alive." - All About Jazz

Press Release :
Marco Benevento is riding a creative surge. Case in point is the 30-year old keyboardist's debut studio album Invisible Baby, scheduled for release February 12 on HYENA Records. The collection proves Benevento a sonic innovator in peak form, defying boundaries and blasting through genres to carve out his own universe. Invisible Baby was recorded in a trio configuration with Benevento joined by bassist Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) and drummers Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos) and Andrew Barr (The Slip). Having earned a multitude of young fans and critical acclaim for his visionary electric keyboard work as one half of post rock instrumentalists The Benevento/Russo Duo, here Benevento utilizes acoustic piano as his main voice. His instincts, however, for arranging sound in fresh and unexpected ways remain firmly intact. On Invisible Baby's eight original compositions, Benevento runs his piano through projector amps and Leslie speakers, coloring the tracks with Mellotron, Speak N Spell, banjo, a vintage church pump organ and all sorts of circuit bent toys which have become his trademark.

"When I came to NYC in 2001, my plan was to make a trio record. I studied with Joanne Brackeen, Kenny Werner and Brad Mehldau. I hung with Mehldau and listened to Largo unmixed and mastered at his house in 2001 while I was studying with him, " says Benevento. "I played two to three gigs a day in NYC, did the jam sessions and played with some incredible NYC musicians. For me this album fulfills something that I've wanted to do since I moved here."

Invisible Baby's highlights include "Bus Ride, " which unfolds around a hypnotic banjo figure played by Marco Benevento. There's a majestic drama to the performance that's punctuated by Reed Mathis' distorted bass chords and Matt Chamberlain's four to the floor, big beat. "Record Book" is an elegant gem, defined by understatement and restraint. Where the listener might expect the piece to crest, Benevento pulls back opting instead for impressionism. If there were still instrumental hit singles, "The Real Morning Party" would be Benevento's "Green Onions, " "Grazin' In The Grass" or "Rockit." It's a quirky, feel-good jam with an instantly infectious melody. Simultaneously, it's one of the album's best headphone tracks. The melody is played on a Farfisa Fast 2 with a warm blanket of combo organs, Wurlitzer and percussion (including Andrew Barr playing brake pads and silver salad bowl). The gorgeous composition "Ruby, " named after Benevento's baby daughter, came to him in a dream before she was born. As he explains, "What moved me to write this song was the part in my dream when she fell asleep in my arms. I tried to make that mental space last. Also, the circuit bent toys are sort of twisted, but reminiscent of childhood." "Are You The Favorite Person Of Anybody" takes a jazz trio's approach to exploring the aural and emotional territory of a band like Radiohead. Its melody floats on a warbling bed of Mellotron, gradually gaining momentum and falling away before the trio works itself into an intense crescendo.

Marco Benevento's career as a solo artist began almost unintentionally. During down time from touring with The Duo in 2006, his manager suggested he set up a residency at the late great improvisational music venue Tonic in New York City. Those five nights in November featured collaborations with a long list of Benevento's musical friends such as Mike Gordon (Phish), Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob), Claude Coleman (Ween) and Mike Dillon (Mike Dillon's Go-Go Jungle) among a host of others. At the eleventh hour, Ropeadope decided to document the residency, releasing it as the 3-CD set Live At Tonic. This in turn led Marco to form his own trio for a string of sold out US shows on both coasts. At the time of those performances, drummer Matt Chamberlain suggested they take the band into the studio. It was a spur of the moment decision that would ultimately lead to the recording of Invisible Baby. The sessions were split between Avast! in Seattle, WA with engineer Mell Detmar and Trout Studios in Brooklyn, NY with Bryce Goggin behind the boards. All of the tracking was done to analog tape.

Marco Benevento will launch Invisible Baby with a January 2008 residency at Sullivan Hall in New York City. The shows are scheduled for January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Special guest those nights will include among others Stanton Moore, G. Calvin Weston, Billy Martin, Skerik, Brad Barr, Joe Russo and Bobby Previte. The final night of the residency will represent the album release party featuring the core east coast trio with Reed Mathis and Andrew Barr.

Marco Benevento talks about Invisible Baby track by track…

1. Bus Ride
"My banjo debut!!! Actually, Trey Anastasio wrote that line (on the guitar) on the bus during the summer of the 2006 tour. Most every night I hibernated in my bunk, tossed my headphones on and fooled around with Logic and wrote ideas into my laptop (that I bought from Charlie Hunter, actually). It seemed as if the song was telling me to be called 'Bus Ride.' I like when songs do that."

2. Record Book
"The germ of this song I wrote in the summer of '05. GE almost used it in there commercial for their alternative energy campaign. I like the difference between this version and the one on Live At Tonic. This version on Invisible Baby is a lot more true to the original idea of the song, mellow and pensive...where you can almost here what the words can be."

3. Atari
"I wrote this one in a hotel room in Atlanta, GA. My purpose when I sat down to record that particular day was to compose AFTER I found a sound that truly made me tingle inside. The version of 'Atari' on my website is the version with those sounds on there. It's important to center your focus and move forward with comfort AFTER you have created a sound that moves you/inspires you."

4. The Real Morning Party
"I wrote this in the Van on a Duo tour. It started in Lawrence, KS. and ended in......who knows where. It was a total joke, stuck in my head, laughin' out loud, smilin', thinking how fun and crazy it is to be on the road sooooooo much... I actually erased the tracks, but kept the Mp3 version just cause it was so ridiculous. Well it turns out that EVERYONE of my family members, and most of my friends, loved the tune, so tracking it that day was a BLAST! Andrew uses silver salad bowls on his hi-hat and at the end he uses car parts (brakes) to make that loud drum sound. Of course, the double-drum/Keith Moon-esque solo at the end freaks me out every time!"

5. You Must Be A Lion
"Yes, the original version is with those lyrics 'you must be a lion' which is what you can sing/hear in your head when the verse comes along. Even though it is instrumental music you can still here the 'verse,' which is a great thing. I love instrumental music because the listener can paint their own picture, and create their own image. I think instrumental music is very interactive, maybe more so, than music with words. It's like a 'choose your own adventure' book. This tune really shows Matt's unique and totally original drum skills."

6. If You Keep On Asking Me
"The haunting, annoying, droning melody of this tune, yeah, it's like the song that represents being slightly annoyed, and focused at the same time. I used a 'Bryce Goggin' original technique for creating that echo on the piano. It's a tape secret. I used a circuit bent Casio, reverse piano, and lots of OLD gigantic spring reverbs to create that psychedelic intro. I love the pace of this tune. It's a lot different than the other fast-paced moving tunes. I also love the bridge."

7. Ruby
"My first dream about Ruby (my daughter) I had BEFORE she was born was comforting and very vivid. Mainly, what moved me to write this song was the part in my dream when she fell asleep in my arms. I tried to make that mental space last while driving to Chicago on a tour, and I wrote this tune in the van. Any time I questioned where to go musically I would conjure up that feeling, in my dream, that feeling of your own child falling asleep in your arms, and it would always help my go to the next part. Andrew plays amazing on ballads! Also the circuit bent toys are sort of twisted, but reminiscent of childhood too. This tune was on Live At Tonic called 'The Arrival Of Greatness.'"

8. Are You The Favorite Person Of Anybody?
"A title taken directly from one of my most favorite short moviemakers, 'Wholphin.' Check it out! Every time I hear this tune, I always think it's my favorite song on the album. Why did I put it last? Well, I hope we'll leave the people wanting more. MELLOTRON!!!! The impact of the spooky, wobbly, strings, makes the tune! The piano through an old projector amp also adds to the color!"
Press Release :
A Three CD Set Documenting A Month Long Residency At The Late Great NYC Music Mecca, Tonic.

Marco Benevento is best known as one half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, the acclaimed instrumental indie rock, post jazz experimentalists, who've earned a legion of fans performing at high profile events like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival and Bonnaroo, while drawing rave reviews at publications ranging from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork. Holding court behind a dizzying array of vintage keyboards, upright and toy pianos, pedals, samplers and other circuit bent gadgets, Benevento has established a reputation as one of the most visionary young keyboardists to emerge in the last decade.

Beyond all the accolades and hype, however, is a supremely-inspired, ever-curious 29-year old artist whose spirit remains rooted in the musicians he studied under and played alongside when first starting out; teachers like Kenny Werner, Billy Hart, Brad Mehldau and Joanne Brackeen and band-mates like Bob Moses, Ari Hoeing, Terreon Gully, Adam Dietch and DJ Olive. It's exactly that innocent childlike desire to play the piano and unbridled passion for musical exploration which led Benevento to set up shop every Wednesday in November 2006 for a residency at Tonic, the recently shuttered New York City improvisational music Mecca.

"For these shows, I decided I was going to invite some of my closest friends along to play and we'd just let the music go where it wanted. I've always thought that if you think too much about something, there winds up being this hesitation that throws the whole 'universal timing' balance off. With improvised music you want to let the music play you, so that's the approach we took," explains Benevento. "When you think of an improvised performance as 'something you don't play' you may wind up with a better mind set. That concept paired with the fact that my friends are my biggest musical inspiration, completely allowed the music to come to life. The entire month of November is a brilliant memory."

Inspired by Ropeadope's recent release Christian McBride ("Live at Tonic"), Benevento invited his old friend Andy Hurwitz (Ropeadope label boss) along to document the proceedings. Alternating between group and solo performance, Benevento played two sets a night and was joined by a different cast of musical co-conspirators for each show. The line-ups included a trio with bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Matt Chamberlain, a duo with bassist Mike Gordon, a drum group with percussionists Bobby Previte, Mike Dillon and Joe Russo and a free play quartet with trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Claude Coleman. The repertoire, while always based in improvisation (including a number of pieces created on the spot), drew from Benevento's own compositions, as well as, classics ranging from Pink Floyd's "Fearless" to Benny Goodman's "Moonglow" to Leonard Cohen's "Seems So Long Ago Nancy" to Thelonious Monk's "Bye Ya".

The highlights will be released August 7 by Ropeadope on three discs of wide-eyed, daringly fierce and cosmically joyous music entitled "Marco Benevento: Live At Tonic".
Biography :
Pianist Brian Haas, drummer Jason Smart, and bassist/effects wizard/guitarist Reed Mathis occupy a rather unique place in the music world. They generate an all-inclusive emotional, mental, spiritual and physical experience for the listener, an experience that moves one beyond any preconceived notions of musical possibilities. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's bold, amorphous and visceral music is influenced just as much by post-rock and ambient electronica as traditional jazz standards, chamber music and free improvisation. JFJO's virtuosic instrumental interplay and near-telepathic improvisation have won over fans and critics alike all over North America, Europe and South America.

These three musicians are musical chameleons who can move crowds in small jazz clubs, big rock clubs and performing arts theaters. JFJO may be dropping jaws while opening up for Sound Tribe Sector 9 or they may be receiving multiple standing ovations while opening up for Al Di Meola - all in the same week of touring. They have been celebrated by the jazz world - playing regularly at NYC's Blue Note, in some of Europe's biggest jazz theaters and appearing in major jazz magazines such as Downbeat and JazzTimes - but they also have found success and audiences in the jam scene - playing large festivals and performing with the likes of Les Claypool, Steve Kimock and the Everyone Orchestra.

The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is the evolution of an ongoing musical discourse that's been developed over countless tours. Starting out in Tulsa, OK as a funky octet in 1994, JFJO became a trio around the turn of the century. Haas and Mathis have been playing together for almost fourteen years (Smart joined the band five years ago) and have, year after year, maintained a tour schedule that would crush less dedicated musicians. Over time, the trio has blossomed into one of the most visionary, fearless and tight bands around. JFJO's rare and different sound exhibits an abstract yet mature musical freedom and inquiry.

In 2004, JFJO released their first album with Hyena Records, Walking with Giants. 2005 saw the release of their second Hyena album, The Sameness of Difference, an album of 13 songs (all but one recorded in one day) produced by recording heavyweight and Hyena label head Joel Dorn. Unlike the all-originals Giants, more than half of Sameness’s tunes are covers of songs by a remarkably eclectic set of composers (Bjork, Brian Wilson, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Neil Young). Most recently in 2006, JFJO released Tomorrow We'll Know Today, a digital exclusive album containing re-mastered live tracks from the US and Europe.
Press Release :
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey return on October 11, 2005 with their brand new studio album, The Sameness of Difference, on HYENA Records. Recorded in collaboration with acclaimed record producer, Joel Dorn, the 13-track collection is a living, breathing, pulsating testament to the 12 years that the trio has spent together. It is unquestionably the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's piece de resistance—a post-modern jazz masterwork. Throughout the album, the band explores their influences, which stretch from cutting edge indie rock to experimental electronic music to classic pop, all the while rooted in an obsession with the modern jazz canon. They offer interpretations of music by Bjork, The Flaming Lips, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, Brian Wilson, Dave Brubeck, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Their own material is also well represented, as original compositions, "Santiago," "The Maestro," "Halliburton Breakdown," "Slow Breath, Silent Mind" and "Davey's Purple Powerline" are etched in stone for the first time ever in the studio.

"The Sameness of Difference was honestly a joy to make. We've never been so unrestricted before in the creative process," states bassist Reed Mathis. "All the way from conception to completion, every aspect of the project flowed. It seemed to create itself as we went along. Anybody who's ever made a record knows how rare it is to achieve that kind of flow."

The Sameness of Difference was recorded at Sear Sound in New York City. Although the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey was originally scheduled for three full days of recording, they tracked the album's entire repertoire in one marathon session. It should be noted that this included a two hour break to retrieve their van from the New York City pound after it was towed earlier in the day. As always, it was the group's complete and utter commitment to improvisation and creating in the moment that served as their most reliable muse. And it's in the lineage and spirit of the countless classic jazz records that were recorded in a day's time that The Sameness of Difference resides.

"We have about 13 records that we've made, but this is the first time I have actually witnessed a record making itself," declares pianist Brian Haas. "We were lucky enough to have Joel Dorn producing the session and Gene Paul engineering the session. Their old school energy balanced out our new school approach, and by the end of the first day in the studio, the record was done! Joel said he hadn't made a record like that since the last Rahsaan Roland Kirk album!"

Producer Joel Dorn, whose resume includes jazz giants such as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, Keith Jarrett and Yusef Lateef, first became enamored with the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey after having seen them perform a version of the standard "Alone Together" at New York City's revered jazz room, Tonic, in 2004. At this point, the trio had already released the critically acclaimed, Walking With Giants, on HYENA. Shortly thereafter, Dorn suggested that the group consider the possibility of recording an album's worth of jazz standards. The idea clicked, but quickly grew to include choosing material from a broadly based spectrum of artists and genres with the sole stipulation being that it had to have inspired the trio's collective musical voice.

"The first time I saw them it immediately struck me how high the group's level of musicianship was, their interaction was so tight and precise," states Joel Dorn. "They're creating music that's completely modern, but at the same time it has those very qualities that appealed to me in the work of artists like Charles Lloyd and Keith Jarrett."

On The Sameness of Difference, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey showcases a telepathic group mind. It's the evolution of an ongoing musical conversation that's been developed over countless tours, but never quite captured as powerfully on their studio records before. Unlike most trios where the bass and drums comprise the rhythm section, JFJO's pianist Brian Haas and drummer Jason Smart often fill this role, while bassist Reed Mathis, regarded as one of the most visionary bass players in improvisational music, renders the lead melody. On the Hendrix anthem, "Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland," Mathis wails mystically atop of a delicate foundation established by Haas and Smart. On Bjork's "Isobel," the group achieves what might be one of their most evocative performances on record thus far. Slowly, steadily, rising Phoenix-like, soaring and sailing, touching down in gentle patterns before leaving the stratosphere all together. Mathis' violin-like passages fully evoke the power of Bjork's lyric.

A sinewy rendition of Mingus' venerable "Fables of Faubus" finds Brian Haas at the center of the storm as he introduces the melody with an understated aplomb, only to slowly and subversively twist and unravel its core in a myriad of directions. Conversely, JFJO's rendition of The Flaming Lips' "The Spark That Bled" is reverent, yet builds to an epic roar that's far too rare in modern jazz. It's perhaps best described as the jazz equivalent of the power trio. The band immediately follows with the sweeping majesty of Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down." They conclude this grouping with Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way," a fanciful interpretation that finds Haas at his most elegant and restrained, while Jason Smart lays down a crisp, contemporaneous groove.

"This is a much more relaxed and user-friendly version of the band," states drummer Jason Smart. "We used to be intentionally jagged and avant-garde, but now we're able to say more with less and in the process bring a wider audience into the fold. In my mind, it's a much higher and more evolved form of expression."

The dichotomy of the material included on The Sameness of Difference, and the group's ability to reinvent such a varied repertoire in an endless array of colors and emotions is consistently engaging. It also hints at one possible explanation of the album's title. But while outside material comprises much of the album, JFJO's own compositions hardly take a back seat. "The Maestro," with its instantly identifiable head figure, opens flower-like in a spiraling jam centered on Brian Haas and Jason Smart's symbiotic counterpoint. The high energy JFJO fan-favorite, "Santiago," is best known as an electric piece, but here it's rendered in a subtlety tweaked acoustic treatment. "Slow Breath, Silent Mind," true to its title, is meditative and marked by grandeur that's wholly beautiful in its sum. Rounding out JFJO's own material is the simultaneously serrated and flowing "Davey's Purple Powerline" and the rollicking political indictment, "Halliburton Breakdown."

The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey performed over 100 dates in 2005, including a tour as the opening act for Les Claypool, appearances at high profile festivals such as the JVC Jazz Festival, High Sierra Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival and the Iowa City Jazz Festival and numerous headline shows from New York City to San Francisco. They were also voted the No. 2 “Rising Star Electric Jazz Group” in DownBeat’s 2005 Critics Poll. They recently made their concert debuts in South America and Europe. And if an endless tour schedule and the recording of a brand new studio album wasn’t enough, individually Brian Haas released his debut solo piano album, The Truth About Hollywood, while Reed Mathis joined the Steve Kimock Band as an official member and Jason Smart toured as the drummer in Robert Walter's 20th Congress. With the release of The Sameness of Difference, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey are primed to begin a new and undoubtedly exciting chapter in their ever evolving odyssey.
The First Ever Solo Album From the Acclaimed Pianist of the JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY

The Truth About Hollywood is the debut album from pianist Brian Haas, but jazz and improvisational music fans are no strangers to his masterful piano work. As one of the founding members of the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Haas is revered for his dynamic chops, abstract improvisations and visceral piano stylings—having recently received rave reviews from the likes of Downbeat, Keyboard Magazine and Signal To Noise, while continuing to perform over 150 dates a year with his original band. On The Truth About Hollywood, Haas goes it alone. It’s just he and the 88 keys of the grand piano at the legendary Hollywood recording studio, Radio Recorders. Haas delves into a program that includes four Monk compositions, a handful of originals and the classic standard, “Alone Together.” It’s a record of elegance and grace that is by all accounts a jazz piano masterwork worthy of the greats into whose sphere Haas is so quickly ascending.

"The ghosts and energies of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Earl Hines, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Orsen Wells and Axl Rose guided me on the 3 day journey that became 'The Truth About Hollwood.'" - Brian Haas.
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - 2 Mn Impro Extract
128 kbps MP3 From "Symbiosis Osmosis" (2004)

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - "Live Acoustic October 2003"
(128 kbps MP3z)
