Press Release :
"An Ear-catching, well assembled debut" National Post
"You can tell there's nothing fake about Abdominal. And that's his edge." Now Toronto
"An interesting debut that leaves you wanting more" Echoes
"Fast-paced, lyrically insane record that could well be an early summer anthem for those choosing to break out the BMX instead of the BMW" Blues & Soul
"A cover to cover lesson in vocal diversity from a man who attacks his tracks from every angle" Exclaim!

Andy Bernstein grew up in Greektown, East End Toronto on a steady diet of skateboarding, souvlaki, art, punk rock and hip hop. Rocking the name MC Abdominal, he formed his first rap crew with the now legendary DJ Serious as a teenager, and started recording, honing his freestyle chops, building an astounding lung capacity, and developing into one of the most lyrically gifted and charismatic performers ever to grace the shores of Lake Ontario.

A chance meeting in 1998 at a downtown party lead him to first cross paths with DJ Fase. The two hit it off immediately, they paired up as Abs & Fase, began recording together, and a limited run of "Vinyl Frontier" records made its way into the hot hands of DJs, radio hosts, and record collectors around the globe. One of them was picked up by UK producer DJ Format, who was floored by this unknown Canadian emcee, and invited him to England to collaborate.

Abdominal's raps became a standout feature on Format's first two full-length releases - Music for the Mature B-Boy and If You can't Join 'Em ...Beat 'Em - selling upwards of 65,000 copies in total worldwide, and spinning off into several highly acclaimed international singles and video releases. The duo hit the road for three years, and from 2003 to 2005 they toured as part of Jurassic 5's European tour, toured with Ugly Duckling, spent a month touring Australia with the Good Vibrations Festival (alongside Lyrics Born and Handsome Boy Modeling School), opened for Roy Ayers, De La Soul and Blackalicious, and rocked the revered stages of the world famous Glastonbury Festival, Leeds Festival, and Reading Festival twice.

Escape From The Pigeon Hole, the first solo record by Abdominal, featuring production by DJ Format, Cut Chemist (from Jurassic 5), Young Einstein (from Ugly Duckling), DJ Fase, DJ Serious, Circle Research, cuts by World DMC champion DJ Dopey, and a special appearance by local jazz phenom Elizabeth Shepherd, the record promises to be Abdominal's richest, most vibrant, most artistically diverse project to date. "My goal is to show a more complete picture of who I am."

The tracklisting is filled with concept songs, ranging from stories about being a bike courier, open relationships, not giving a f**k, and his cat. Strong lyricism, detailed imagery, plenty of humour, and the illest of flows carry through the album beautifully, from start to finish. Abdominal is not only escaping the pigeon hole - he is leaving it far behind in his pedal-pushing dust.
Press Release :
Matt Ford, formally known as DJ Format, comes straight outta 'Hampton. Southampton. Maybe not the glorified upbringing that's likely to be expected from a rising hip hop pioneer, but Format is plenty appreciative of his past. His background is a charming reflection of how he came to be the guru who now stands proudly behind a mastered set of decks, his tool of choice being a record box bursting with previously undiscovered gems and an enviable stack of his own EPs, LPs and remixes.

"There was only one record shop in Southampton that would get imports, you know, decent hip hop. It kind of brings out the nerd in you being into hip hop in the late 80s in someplace like Southampton cos you had to hunt stuff down; even with newly released music, you had to put the work in. That's probably where I got the ethic from." - DJ Format

After years of getting his fingers dirty digging through dusty crates, the vinyl fanatic found himself falling into a production groove, thanks to an absorbed dedication and persistent drive. It was that very drive that got him behind the wheel of Jurassic 5's van on their first UK tour, which perhaps helped to steer his direction further. Shortly after hooking up with J5's Chali 2na and Akil, he managed to snag P.I.A.S. under his belt, and subsequently fired out two massive LPs from his holster - 'Music for the Mature B-boy' and 'If You Can't Join 'Em…Beat 'Em.' His celebrated collaboration with Canadian MC Abdominal has spun him around the globe and back on tour. He's touched down just about anywhere and everywhere except…well, Fabric.

"Eventually my agent sorted this gig out, and no kidding, I get there and there had been a power cut, the fire alarms were going off. Literally, I grabbed my record box to go in and everyone was in the street. So when I went in and did the photoshoot in the club just now, that was the first time I've ever been in there. But yeah, hopefully by the time the mix comes out I'll have played in the club finally." - DJ Format

'FABRICLIVE 27' is a fiery mix that could ignite any club atmosphere - a delightfully engaging juxtaposition where Ananda Shankar meets Lyrics Born and Def Jux gets introduced to Ellen Mcilwaine. The mix kicks off with Format's own funk-charged '33% B-Boy,' hops smoothly into scratches and loops from Ugly Duckling, and cuts to Lyrics Born's attention-stealing, freewheeling, hypnotizing, mesmerizing technique of setting words to flight. On '3ft Deep,' Abdominal and D-Sisive charm the bassline with their playful eloquence, illustrating their audible synergy with Southampton's favourite producer. Just as the mix seems dominated by beat juggling, b-boy breaks and cut n paste samples, Nostalgia 77 alluringly sweeps in with his beauteous 'Changes.' Thereupon Format transports the mix back to a time when the roarin' 60s soul movement was in full swing, when Ella's slinky phrasing and powerful intonation ruled the charts and Nina Simone's passion and tremolo were righteous reasons for celebrity status. The mix sublimely exposes modern hip hop's unsung influences as it soars alongside the masters' masterpieces. The soul-drenched blend is fuelled by wah wah guitars, jazzy syncopations, funky basslines, emotive vocals, wailing, jazz organs, crashing symbols, wild snares, bold brass blares, and even a sitar. It ends with the lavish contralto of Cleo Laine easing the way into Edan's genre-clashing 'Rock N Roll,' proof that all those "music back in my day…" musings are as irrelevant as the whereabouts of a producer's upbringing. It's all relative. As Ms Fitzgerald once said - "It isn't where you came from, it's where you're going that counts."

Press Release (french) :

If You Can't Join Em... Beat 'Em'.

Press Release :
If it's party-starting super-funky b-boy hip hop breaks you're after, look no further than DJ Format, while if it's free-flowing, lyrically dextrous rapping you fancy, check out Canadian MCs Abdominal & D-Sisive. Featuring long time collaborator Abdominal and Canadian MC D-Sisive, watch also for the contributions of Jurassic 5's Chali 2Na & Akil DJ Format , Abdominal & D-Sisive were recent visitors to our shores as part of the Good Vibrations Festival. In April 2005, DJ Format releases his long awaited second album 'If You Can't Join 'Em... Beat 'Em', the follow up to his highly successful 2003 debut 'Music for The Mature B-Boy', both on PIAS' Genuine imprint, home of renowned artists such as Amp Fiddler and new signing Little Barrie. 'If You Can't Join 'Em... Beat 'Em' includes songs road-tested at 2004's triumphant Leeds & Reading Festival appearances. It's supporting cast includes regular collaborator MC Abdominal, introduces the brilliant new talent of another Canadian MC, D-Sisive and once again features the more than dependable tones of Jurassic 5's Chali 2Na & Akil.

DJ Format's debut album 'Music for Mature B-Boy' is a word of mouth triumph. Having entered the game as Jurassic 5' van driver way back when on J5's first UK tour in '97 Format then cut his teeth with a series of remixes and compilation inclusions for the like of Mo Wax and esteemed US hip hop label Bomb's 'Return Of The DJ' series before settling down in 2002 on then new PIAS imprint Genuine Records to release his debut 'Ill Culinary Behaviour' EP and start work on the first album. 'If You Can't Join 'Em... Beat 'Em' is set to project DJ Format further than his existing fan-base. His characteristic funk injected sound coming on fully honed with Format's distinctive pounding beats, Abdominal¹s now trade-mark flow and perfect foil D-Sisive, conjuring a lyrical dexterity seldom heard in music today be it rap or whatever else. Format's signature b-boy instrumentals, downtempo sketches and body rocking backdrops work seamlessly across the record and like few others he retains a knack of simultaneously infiltrating the tastes of people who don't normally give hip hop a second thought while turning the most hardened crate spotting freak into a salivating mess. Quite a feat.

Lyrically, Abdominal steers clear of old ground, with rhymes about his and Matt's looks ("Ugly Brothers"), the make up of the group (Separated At Birth) and homespun logic as to why they make the music they do ("Participation Prerequisite"). In between this, B-boy instrumentals and the downbeat melancholicadelica of 'Black Cloud' Format goes the extra yard with a treat in 'The Place' featuring Jurassic 5's Chali 2Na and Akil and D-Sisive's one solo cut, "Another One of Those Songs" is another standout track and highlight chorus. This album firmly raises the bar from the previous. With hooks to boot, this seriously witty and wittily serious dancefloor friendly album should see Format cement his reputation with his legion of fans whilst reaching out to a good few more with a fistful of highlights, amongst them 'Separated at Birth', 'Another One Of Those Songs, 'I'm Good' and 'Rap Machine'.
Dj Format - Presents A Right Earful Mix Tape Volume 1
(Antidote 2004)
