The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted N°1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated... Continue reading

Press Release (english) :
This Autumn brings the launch of a priority new series on Strut as the label takes a break from its schedule of funky compilations and moves into new studio recordings for the first time. Entitled Inspiration Information, the series brings together current artists and producers with their musical heroes for a mouth-watering one-off collaboration. With each album centred around an intensive five-day writing and recording session, the emphasis is on spontaneity, musicianship and an open A&R brief.

The series kicks off with Detroit soul maverick Amp Fiddler in a head-to-head with reggae legends, Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare. "This is monumental for me," says Amp. "I discovered Sly & Robbie through their Compass Point productions with Wally Badarou, all the Grace Jones records, 'Boops' too. I loved the way they experimented with a more ambient direction."

"Our manager Guillaume Bougard, "The General", told us about Amp," says Robbie. "We heard that he used to be part of the Funkadelic set-up." "We were always right into the Parlia-Funkadelic sound," recalls Sly. "Their brand of funk was so different. I loved it from their first record. Me and Bootsy Collins are good friends - he played on one of our albums - and I always loved Motown too, ever since I was a kid. That all brought us closer to Amp and the musical groove just stuck. We hit it off from the first session."

Arriving at Anchor Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, armed only with a handful of acoustic vocal ideas, Amp and the Riddim Twins recorded the album in just three days during June with overdubs laid down a week later in Detroit. "We work fast," says Robbie. "Time is money!" The result is a confident, laid back set that brings a whole new twist to Amp's trademark vocal style: Sly builds innovative digital and live rhythms, Robbie underpins the tracks with solid bass foundations and original generation guests "Sticky" Thompson (percussion) and Dalton Browne (guitar) add plenty of colour. Back in Detroit, Amp knitted together the finishing touches, adding extra keys and backing vocals.

The tracks are never predictable, at times echoing Sly & Robbie's '80s days with Island Records at Compass Point studios, at others structured around more mood-based keyboard pads and new patterns re-inventing the established dancehall template. "It's been amazing - the level of musicianship is sky high," explains Amp. "Sly & Robbie work so well together - everything has happened really smoothly." Within the sessions, the trio honed both new compositions and covers, including a pertinent re-work of a George Clinton-era classic, 'Paint The White House Black' re-titled by Sly as 'Black House'. They also revisited select tracks from Amp's 'Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly' album from 2004, with Amp favourites like 'I Believe In You' re-worked over a lilting reggae base. The album was mixed in London by another original Island Records studio regular, Godwin Logie, complete with extra dub versions of selected tracks worked live off the desk.

All album design inspired by some of the striking photography-led sleeves of the '70s on the Prestige and Blue Thumb labels. This album features images by leading US photographer Wonder Knack and is packaged in a deluxe digipak with a CD booklet documenting the sessions.
Press Release :
Reaching the age of 10 years is always a major and unique event in the life of a band. It is a very special moment that invites you to look on back on the past and admire the long way you've come. THE BLACK SEEDS are celebrating this very special birthday with Solid Ground, the best album they ever released.

In ten years the 8 piece roots/dub/funk outfit hailing from the coastal capital of Wellington, New Zealand has matured to become one of the major pacifasian music bands. In 2001 the band lead by singer/writer BARNABY WEIR recorded the critically acclaimed and gold-selling debut album Keep On Pushing. They kept on turning heads around with their second album On The Sun released in 2004. With its 2 hit singles So True and Turn It Around being on heavy rotation on all the national radios and music televisions On The Sun achieved double platinum sales at home and helped solidifying THE BLACK SEEDS' status as one of New Zealand's premier groups. They exposed internationally their pacific vibe and their feel good, reggified and sunkissed grooves with Into The Dojo released in 2007 on Sonar Kollektiv. To support the release of their third album THE BLACK SEEDS completed a very successful 18-show European tour in July/August 2007 that included sell-out shows in London (Mean Fiddler), the Edinburgh Festival (3 shows), Berlin (2 shows), a standout performance at the famous Lowlands Festival in Holland (70,000 strong), a live performance on the BBC's CRAIG CHARLES Funk and Soul Show, as well as strong attendances in many other venues across the UK, France, Germany and Holland.

With such an extensive local and international touring over the past years the members of THE BLACK SEEDS have never been so close to each other. This closeness has had a great influence upon the band, his evolution and upon the creative process of their fourth studio-album Solid Ground, in which everybody has been constantly involved. Moreover founding values such authenticity and integrity never left the creative spirits of all the members of the SEEDS after all these years. The result is an album showing more creative maturity and more conscious experimentation. As BARNABY WEIR puts it „THE BLACK SEEDS are a tight. (... ) We have set a solid foundation for the band over 10 years (... ) and with Solid Ground we've been experimenting with some new flavours and directions. (... ) I believe we have all got better at what we do individually and together and have created some exciting new songs." Recorded again at The Surgery Studio with DR LEE PREBBLE and produced by MIKE FABULOUS, Solid Ground is a real masterpiece fusing infectious dub-reggae grooves, melodies and party jams with raw, uncompromising and undiluted conscious roots music. Once again a great importance has been placed on remaining true to who they are and where they are from - from the expansive green landscapes and coastlines of New Zealand and the South pacific, to the urban community of their home city Wellington.

With Solid Ground THE BLACK SEEDS aim for the truth in twelves gems made of dub, funk, afrobeat and soul, with a vintage reggae base. Crossing genre boundaries in only a way THE BLACK SEEDS can, Solid Ground oozes with the bands distinctive flavour – from the heavy-hitting karma-inspired first single Slingshot, to darker reggae/dub-infused tracks like Send a Message &The Bubble, infectious reggae gems like Love Is A Radiation, Come To Me and Bulletproof, and the funk/soul filled - Rotten Apple and AfroPhone. Once again every song conveys very deep feelings and very strong messages: Personal triumphs and failures, the fear of Love, death and apathy, relationships - good and bad, personal stories and insights into their lives in a multi-cultural, modern nation. But, ultimately every song is underpined with a positive and optimistic undertone, even when confronting hard truths or lessons learnt. This year again THE BLACK SEEDS will be performing all over Europe and presenting Solid Ground in all the biggest festivals such as The Lovebox Weekender (featuring the FLAMING LIPS, MANU CHAO, GROOVE ARMADA) and Rip Curl Boardmasters Festival in the UK, Roskilde in Denmark (featuring RADIOHEAD, KINGS OF LEON, etc); the Summerjam and Splash Festivals in Germany (JAY Z, COMMON, STEVEN MARLEY); the Garance Festival in France and many more. So don't stay aside and come enjoy the solid grooves and fresh irie sounds of THE BLACK SEEDS!
Press Release :
After years of passion and hard work, Daniel Best's Best Seven imprint has gone from strength to strength. Established almost ten years ago, it has brought legendary New Zealand bands Fat Freddys Drop and The Black Seeds to Europe, and helped artists such as Eva Be, Chaka Domu, Kabuki, Paul St. Hilaire and Frost & Wagner establish a name for themselves. Almost 2 years after the second in the series, Best is ready to release a brand new collection of dub and reggae gems; and it has definitely been worth the wait. Best Seven Selections 3 is simply the best instalment of the series so far.

Best Seven Selections 3 is an astounding collection of music fused with dub spirit, soulful vocals and conscious lyrics, showcasing upcoming artists like Sisters, Ladi 6, Jah Seal, Cat Rat and The Dynamics, as well as some of the Best Seven stalwarts and bigger names on the dub and reggae scene. While reggae is the common meeting point for all the music featured on Best Seven Selections 3, this new chapter easily crosses the traditional boundaries of the genre, combining roots, reggae and dub with more personal influences and musical flavours from across the world. All this makes Best Seven Selections 3 a musical benchmark for the dub, roots and reggae community.

The album starts on a feminine note with the Sisters take on Play With Fire by the Rolling Stones. Sisters is an Afro-German soul best known for their activism, joining soul, dub and conscious lyrics to form a musical statement against all forms of racism. Berlin based drum'n'bass producer Kabuki reveals a hidden side of his musical soul with the soulful Another You. Deeper Waters is the first single from Recloose's latest album Perfect Timing, and features Kiwi legend Joe Dukie on vocals while Yes King provide exemplary remix duties. Frost & Wagner provide You're The Best Thing, a brand-new original composition which is a featured release on this compilation. The Black Seeds enlighten our spirits with Love Is A Radiation, the second single taken from their new album Solid Ground.

New Zealand's premier female vocalist Ladi 6 kicks off the second half with Walk Right Up, a powerful dub-roots number. The Dynamics explore the connection between Jamaican reggae and American soul with their moody cover of 90% Of Me Is You. Sygaire melds dub and reggae sounds with Arabic influences for Good To Go, while Tosca provide an album exclusive with Brian Emely, a track that fuses roots vocals with their inimitable downtempo style. Berlin's Jah Seal slow down the tempo even more with the heavyweight Jah Soldier. Finally, renowned remixers Haaksman + Haaksman conclude the compilation with Na Lathina, a track that couples dub infusions with Latino and Brazilian spices.

Daniel Best once again proves that dub-reggae is a global music genre that builds upon the past to look towards the future; and with Best Seven Selections 3 the future sound of dub and reggae is already in your ears!

WHOSE WORLD IS THIS as an album represents the idea that all people who have had our freedom, our rights, and our land stolen from us, must take back what is rightfully ours. In the making of this album, I wanted to create something that would serve as a voice for people who do not have one. However, I am aware that this album is available to anyone and everyone who chooses to buy it. So, to who ever is reading this, regardless of your religion, ethnicity, or economic background; we have to remember one thing: we all have a choice of whose side we can be on. The time is now for us to choose a side, no longer can we stand in the middle of the line. We are either part of the problem, or a part of the solution. If this album offends you, then I do not want your support, nor do I look at you as an ally. For the people who agree with my ideals, we all need to ask ourselves this question: How long will we allow the powers that be to spread their corruption, slavery, and rape? We have to stand up for ourselves at all times, but even more important, we must stand up for those who have it worse off than us. Only then will we be free.

I would like to dedicate this album to all people around the world who live in constant fear of being arrested, deported, attacked, or murdered just because of who we are. The truth is that all Immigrants, Refugees and People of Color everywhere have had to come to terms with the fact that we have no rights, and anything could happen to us at any time. I made this album because I wanted the world to hear our story. The World Is Ours.

I would also like to dedicate this album to all people who have had their land stolen from them, from New Orleans to Palestine. We must take it upon ourselves to learn about what is really happening around the world, rather than watching the news because we are not going to get any type of truth from watching a media broadcast that is funded by vampires. Believe it or not, what goes on in places like Iran and Palestine has a direct effect on what goes on to working people and people of color everywhere. If you stand up and demand justice for people somewhere else, then there is a greater chance that you will live in justice in your neck of the woods. Otherwise, what is going to stop these major corporations and imperialist powers from continuing to seize land without hesitation; then destroying it, and rebuilding it to their own liking; just as they are doing to Brown people in Palestine, and Black people in New Orleans; just as they did to the Indigenous people in the United States and everywhere else. There can never really be justice on stolen land.

Furthermore, I would like to dedicate this album to the people who created this music and culture that is currently being raped by major corporations and record labels. The majority of people who are making big money off of hip-hop are people who have added nothing to the culture, and are not giving anything back to the communities where it originated. This album is dedicated to all real hip-hoppers worldwide who are representing the culture to the fullest (activists, political prisoners, grassroots organizers, emcees, Djs, producers, b-boys, graf writers, singers, musicians, poets, etc) and giving something back to the communities, rather than just taking. The World Is Ours.

There are many other people who this album should be dedicated to. However, The World Is Ours was not meant to be a dedication album. Instead this album is a movement, made to spark new ideas and philosophies that would in turn bring about a change in this wicked system; and lead to a better way of life. We do not have control of the lies that they spread in the news and mainstream media. But at the same time, we have our own media the streets. We are not really taking advantage of the opportunities that we have to voice our opinion. The propagandist is just as important as the revolutionary. Somehow, we are going to have to change the way things are going. Somebody somewhere will have to take a standit might as well be you. It is time for us to take back that which was stolen from us the truth: The World Is Ours.

PEACE & BLESSINGS,
K-SALAAM

<br
Check out what some of the artists wrote about the project:

"I am so happy to be a part of this album representing the struggle of the people. For too long we have been tortured, prosecuted, and oppressed. World Leaders have their own agenda, so are we as a people, we Are the world. The World Is Ours. And we live by the trustworthy principle of ourselves to take us through. We are only human, we can only stand up for whats right. Therefore, if these words be of offense to you it is just the truth, and we express this truth in our songs, on a daily basis. Through the way we live, and the cruel and inhumane actions brought upon us. Peace be to the world. The World Is Ours. Jah Rastafaris Love. Let Us All Love."
Yours Truly, Love You All.
- Sizzla Kalonji

"THE WORLD BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE, BUT IT IS CONTROLLED BY THE STRONGEST ARMY...THROUGH ORGANIZATION WE CAN FULLY EXERCISE OUR POWER AS A PEOPLE AND AS INDIVIDUALS. AS INDIVIDUALS WE HAVE TO DO WHAT WE CAN TO SURVIVE AND GAIN POSITIONING THAT CAN HELP THE WHOLE. AS GROUPS WE MUST GUARD AGAINST NARROW MINDED NESS AND REMAIN OPEN MINDED AND PROGRESSIVE SO THE MOVEMENT CAN AVOID STAGNATION AND PETTYNESS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. ABOVE ALL, LOVE EACH OTHER, PROTECT EACH OTHER, EACH ONE TEACH ONE, LIVE YO TRUTH, KEEP YOUR INTEGRITY AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE TO BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE. THE WORLD IS OURS!"
- DEAD PREZ

The World Is Ours/ But the whole world is in problems/ No one seems to can solve them/ Only Love, Truth, and Compassion can resolve them/ More Fire/ Fire is for the Purification/ Let it Burn/
- Poem submitted by Capleton The Prophet

"Until we realize and accept that we are one people, living in one world...this World will never be Ours and there will never be a Revolution"
- Anthony B

"I heard a K-Salaam mix years ago. It touched me so much it moved me to tears. Never before had a mixtape affected me so deeply, so when K invited me to be part of his new LP--I was super-honored. The plight of Vieques is familiar. Basically, an innocent and decent community of people needlessly suffering in favor of colonization, military occupation, and greed of a world power. How different is that from Palestine, or the former apartheid-ruled South Africa, or countless other countries under siege? I say we keep praying, putting out positive energy for one another, and continue to exchange knowledge."
Press Release :
Originally released in 1979, Johnny Osbourne's Truths and Rights LP helped usher in the 1980s dancehall sound. It solidified Johnny Osbourne's popularity, and he would go on to become one of the most prolific of the dancehall reggae singers. Recorded in Jamaica and produced by Clement Dodd, Johnny was presented with a plethora of classic Studio One rhythms from the vaults on which to record. The legendary foundation label was undergoing a creative renaissance with new prototypical dancehall albums by Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott, Michigan & Smiley, Willie Williams, and of course, Johnny Osbourne. This deluxe edition includes all ten album tracks, remastered from the original tapes. A further six tracks - extended mixes, a dee-jay version, a dub version, and a bonus track from the period - have been added. The liner notes include a recent interview with Cleveland "Clevie" Browne, of Steely & Clevie fame.

Press Release :
What do you call a project featuring modern Jazz/Fusion/Jam's most ubiquitous guitarist, Roots Reggae music's most prolific drummer, and three players from the biggest American Reggae band in the world?

Rockamovya brings together long time Jazz-heavyweight, Grammy nominated Will Bernard (Motherbug, Stanton Moore trio, Dr. Lonnie Smith), the incomparable Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace (Burning Spear, The Abyssinians, the cult film classic "Rockers") and Ryan Newman (bass), Marcus Urani (organ/keys/piano) and Harrison Stafford (rhythm guitar/ vocals) of the internationally acclaimed Cali-based Reggae-Fusion group Groundation for what will surely be a genre-defying classic of an album.

Rockamovya is already generating a strong buzz within the more traditional music industry, as well as the ever-growing conscious music community. The expansive and altogether new sound Rockamovya emits is due in large part to the inter-generational links the album has created. Whether its Horsemouth's 1960's era steppers rhythms, Bernard's 1970's inspired jazz-funk licks, or the wholly unique 21st century roots sound of Groundation, Rockamovya reaches across demographics and genres to entice and enthral listeners of any and every tribe.
Press Release :
The fifty ninth release on Pressure Sounds is due out on the 16th of June 2008.

'Every Mouth Must Be Fed' takes its name from an I Roy track featured on the set and one that neatly sums up the ethos behind Micron Records Limited. Their set up, based on Retirement Road in Kingston, Jamaica, gave countless producers and artists a creative opening for their work that otherwise would have been denied to them.

'Conference at Waterhouse… your destination King Tubby's studio' intones Jah Stitch as the album opens with his tougher than tough version to the 'Satta Dread' rhythm followed by some superb vocals from Junior Byles & Joe Higgs, a selection of top talk from deejays U Roy & I Roy, horns led instrumentals from Tommy McCook & Bobby Ellis and some superlative Tubby's mixes that are not only rare but show the dub master at his very best.
As usual Pressure Sounds have compiled tracks that offer music fans that little bit extra and have again unearthed some overlooked gems and rare records that will touch your soul. Was there ever a better Jamaican singer than Junior Byles? He's up there with the best of them and 'Lorna Banana' and his interpretation of 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' are amongst his finest recordings… the highly sought after 'Our Rights' from The Defenders is text book Kingston style vocal harmony with classical sufferers lyrics… I Roy should need little in the way of introduction and is probably the most consistent deejay that Jamaica ever produced.

The production throughout is clean and crisp with Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Bunny 'Striker' Lee and the not quite so well known Pete Weston at the helm. Pete was one of the trio of musical entrepreneurs that ran the label. Perhaps Micron is not as instantly recognisable as many of the more celebrated Jamaican labels but any half ways decent reggae collection will be bound to include more than a couple of Micron records. 'Every Mouth Must Be Fed' highlights their work and puts the focus on an organisation that really was important both as a label and as a business.

This crackling Pressure Sounds compilation showcases totally re-mastered tracks that present the music at its best and that also comes packed with the usual excellent graphics, photographs, extensive liner notes and in-depth interviews with Pete Weston.
Four songs and their dubs - slotting in lovers, bubblers and rockers, and well-charge dub, with great playing and Sugar brilliantly focussed throughout - which originally appeared in 1983 as a picture-sleeved ten-inch on the singer's Black Roots imprint. 'Everyone played Informer, all the sounds,' recalls Rae Cheddie, who remembers selling more than five hundred copies straight from the Wackies office in Soho, London. 'It was international - a couple of boxes went to Japan, some to Mad Robbie at Fotofon...'
'Special dedication to all dancehall fans', it says on the label.

Press Release :
By the age of 15, Daivd Rodigan was DJing at school dances and youth clubs.
The infectious, crazy back beat of Jamaican Ska first capitivated him as a teenager in the mid 60's; it was a driving, energetic sound which he found impossible to resist. When the pace cooled down and condensed into Rocksteady David was equally enamoured because the sweet, arching vocal style of Jamaica's young stats could be heard to full effect.

The music was fresh, original and soulful. His fascination for these sounds became an obsession as he began what was to e a life-long love affair with the music of Jamaica and for the past 30 years he has had the privilege of playing these songs on the radio and in clubs. In 1978, David Rodigan obtained a job on Radio London to alternate with Tony Williams on the Reggae Rockers programme. A year later he was offered a permanent slot at Capitol Radio to present Roots Rockers, which ran for 11 years. When Kiss FM re-launched in the early 90's as London's first legal 24-hour dance music station, they offered David Rodigan a show where he currently hosts the Sunday night slot from 11PM till 1AM.

By way of celebration, he has chosen a collection of tracks which encompass the positive aspects of real authentic reggae; essential, classic recordings, some of which have become gloriously obscure antiquities whilst more recent hits are also embraced.

May these songs bring to you the magic of a unique, inspiring music which took life in the bustling dancehalls of Jamaica 50 years ago.

We are also proud to present cover artist Clifford Harper. The slf-described "anarchist and cartoonist" was born in 1949 in West London. In the 1970's he began to work as an illustrator, mainly for the radical movement, this led gradually to more mainstream work.
Since the 1980's his work has appeared regularly in all the major newspapers in Britain and in the last few years he has become one of The Guardian's most popular illustrators. We are pleased to say he will illustrate the covers for all 5 volumes of this compilation series by David Rodigan.
Press Release (french) :

On remarquera les titres ‘There’s A Reward’ et ‘Song My Enemy Sings’ .

: " this is a superb release that we are all very excited about." Peter Holdsworth – Pressure Sounds

Press Release :
Basic Replay is a reggae reissue label run by Honest Jon’s in London and Basic Channel / Rhythm & Sound in Berlin. This album is a sampler of its releases since starting in 2004. All except two of the tracks are new to CD.

The Ackie and Tenastilin tracks are from the London dancehall, killer shots from 1986 and 1992. Basic Replay’s hit 12" reissue of Rambo was the subject of articles in Wax Poetics in the US, and (a double page) Natty Dread in France.

Over decades, Shaka would on special occasions unleash the staggering dub - with its foghorn effect - of Ijahman’s rare, resplendent first version of I am A Levi (recorded in London in 1974). Also the apocalyptic Ayatollah, recorded by Jackie Mittoo post-Studio One, in New York. From Canada, King Culture’s stunning dub of Barry Brown is surely the deadliest cut of the mighty Cuss Cuss rhythm. The Courtney Melody, Chuck Turner and White Mice are classic no-mercy Stateside digi sufferers - from just a few years ago, the Andrew Bees (the Black Uhuru singer) is in the same lofty tradition.

Keith Hudson’s LP masterwork Flesh Of My Skin is represented by its opener, featuring Count Ossie; alongside cruelly brilliant, deeply grooving productions by Niney The Observer and Prince Jazzbo which epitomise the label's appeal to the reggae cognoscenti over the last three years, but crucially also beyond, to fans of dubstep, techno, anything tough and worth a listen.
