Toots & the Maytals - "True Love"
(V2 2004)

Toots se paie le luxe d'un "greatest hits" réenregistrés avec plethore d'invités ultra-célèbres. Sur le papier, ça fait peur: on repense à l'horrible daube que Santana avait refourgué par millions avec ses guests stars en veux-tu, en voilà ("Supernatural" avec Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill & Cee-Lo, Wyclef Jean, Eagle Eye Cherry, Eric Clapton)... Mais je vous rassure même si ici la production est un peu surgonflée, ce sont des invités triés sur les volets blues, rock et hip hop, qui viennent aider à épousseter les vieux tubes de Toots.
Au rayon des reprises plaisantes on compte les tracks de Toots avec Shaddy et Rahzel ("Bam Bam" version dancehall human beatbox), Eric Clapton ("Pressure Drop" en blues-rock-steady et maximum wah-wah), Terry Hall (ex-Specials), The Skatalites et U-Roy ("Never Grown Old" à la moulinette ska bien cuivrée), et Ken Boothe & Marcia Griffiths (un "Reggae Got Soul" on ne peut plus reggae soul...).
Les perles qui font de ce CD un petit bijou sont plutôt à chercher du côté des featurings de Ryan Adams ("Time Tough" reggae-gospel poignant), Trey Anastasio, le leader et guitariste de Phish ("Sweet And Dandy", track reggae-calypso qui n'avait jamais aussi bien porté son nom), Bunny Wailer ("Take A Trip" bien deep, très blues et pas mal roots), Keith Richards ("Careless Ethiopians") et surtout Bootsy Collins et les Roots pour un "Funky Kingston" d'anthologie, ne serait-ce que pour son intro killer: "Let me hear you say Toots, Roots and Boots"!!

Phish - "Live Phish 07.15.03" / "Live Phish 02.28.03" / "Live Phish 07.29.03"

Phish se séparent définitivement à la fin de l'été 2004. 20 années de tournées auront eu raison du groupe qui préfère splitter que de laisser la lassitude, la routine, s'installer, et les albums studios moyens s'enfiler. En même temps, quand on entend ces trois concerts de 2003 disponibles sur leur site (et dans quelques magasins spécialisés) en triple CDs économiques, où le groupe déchire sa grand-mère comme on dit dans le quartier, on se pose quelques questions... COMMENT??? QUOI??? HEIN??? JE PEUX PAS LE CROIRE!! Oui, oui, c'est ça ils se séparent c'est fini, plus jamais. Ce ne sera pas les premiers ni les derniers à nous faire le coup. Les quatre membre du groupe (si à ce point de la chronique vous vous demandez toujours qui est Phish cliquez ici) avaient déjà fait un "hiatus" récemment. Une pause qui fut l'occasion de sortir, pour chacun d'entre eux, des disques de leurs projets personnels, parmi lesquels je ne saurait trop conseiller le live de Trey Anasatasio "Plasma" (pour le 2ème set), l'album solo de Mike Gordon "Outside" et le deuxième album du groupe du clavier Page McConnell, Vida Blue, "The Illustrated Band", avec les Spam Allstars de Miami. Bref Phish arrêtent, mais le cirque continue. Ouf! On a eu peur. C'est juste vraiment dommage pour ceux qui ne les auront jamais vu en concert, une expérience inoubliable comme pouvait l'être un concert du Grateful Dead à son époque... Ils pourront se consoler avec ces 3 nouveaux lives, et puis probablement pleins de nouveaux qui sortiront le long des années à venir, et puis tous les nouveaux projets musicaux de ces quatre musiciens extraordinaires. Encore chapeau messieurs!

Mike Gordon - "Soul Food Man"

Que nos mais les fans de Phish se réjouissent: même si leur groupe favori n'a plus depuis longtemps atteint des sommets en studio, chacun de ses membres a sorti des albums plus ou moins "solo", et celui du bassiste, Mike Gordon, intitulé "Inside in" est sûrement le meilleur, le plus abouti, le plus cohérent et le plus créatif de tous. Désolé messieurs Trey anastasio, Jon Fishman (et son groupe Pork Tornado) ou Page McConnell (et son groupe Vida Blue), c'est Mike Gordon qui rafle la mise (sans parler de son sublime album avec Leo Kotkke)! Preuve n'en sera pas faite en un seul track avec ce mp3, "Soul Food Man", mais au moins Mike présente élégamment son espèce de pop roots-funky à la basse bien évidemment proéminente tout autant que gracieuse, bien qu'hors du contexte de l'album, qui s'écoute vraiment d'une traite (et en boucle). Une vidéo est aussi disponible ainsi qu'une morceau-joke, le "Ida James Outtake" (gold help him), anecdotique.

Commandement: si vous ne connaissez pas Oysterhead, téléchargez-moi çe "Mr Oysterhead" fissa! Oysterhead est super-groupe comme on en faisait dans les 70's, avec Trey Anastasio (Phish) à la guitare, Les Claypool (Primus) à la basse et Stewart Copeland (Police) à la batterie, et ça joue sévère!!! Après quelques dates et un album fantastique, les divers membres du groupes sont retournés à leurs activités personnelles (Phish et le Trey Anastasio Band, Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade et le Colonel Les Claypool's Bucket Of Bernie Brains...), mais apparemment ils se sont tellement marrés qu'un deuxième album serait prévu, on ne sait juste pas encore pour quand...
Pour les fans, deux "lobotomies auditives", à savoir des edits de jams effectués par Stewart Copeland, super vachement bien, drôles et créatives... pour les fans.
